For cheap low end there's hostgator and 1and1. They oversell a lot, which means you don't actually get the bandwidth and space they tell you. For a simple local business site, it will probably do.
For something more reliable, there's moose.cc (not a true hosting company, but most of my sites are with him and it has been great, with no real issues)
You can also check webhostingtalk.com for more suggestions.
Later on I will offer hosting, but I still have lot of work to do on my control panel so it will be a while till this happens.

Dreamhost are fine for small sites. They also regularly offer 1 years hosting for a small set price.
Just checked and they have an offer on for today only. $10 for a years hosting and domain registration. They're also a green host if that matters.
Ive used them a few times for sites

STAY AWAY FROM GODADDY! all im going to say. If you need to make that mistake to learn from it then go ahead.
Host depends on traffic and usage.
I personally would recommend
BlueHost or
HostMonster for a decent share host.
If you know what your doing then go look at
webfaction. They are completely customizable. Its shell access and you are in complete control of your web server to do with it what ever you want to.
Hard thing about hosting is server response time which is a guess unless you already use the service.
I can provide a host if you need something temporary. My servers are decently fast, and i can give you a pretty good deal.
