Starting out...?

I'm new here and I haven't really played any UO since OSI switched over to AoS...so as a slight understatement, I'm a little out of the loop.
I'm just curious as to how a former Trammy would want to start out in this server. It seems like Stealth/Lockpickers sound good for starter money, but the uber characters are Necromancers when it comes to sheer soloability.
When I played last, I was played more of a gatherer/builder character (7xGM Miner, Blacksmithy, Lumberjack, Carpentry, Tinker, Tailor, Bowcraft/Fletch). I am more prone to start out with this kind of character and I was wondering if it would suit me well and if this is a viable way to provide for future characters.
Like I said, a lot of these skills and areas are going to be new to me (Such as necromancy/Bushido etc.) and some general strategy would also help me immensely with regard to these skills. I am particularly interested in the template/general strategy of the Necromancer, because I will most likely be soloing more often than not.
Thanks in advance

Two great ways to make money:
Create a gather/crafter. Either mine or chops trees for boards. On here there are custom quests given by crafted NPCs. You need to give them specified amounts of resources + craft for them. This can reward you with high end runic tools (special craft tools that allow you to make gear with high end mods). These quests can also pay a handsome amount of gold.
Like you mentioned, make a lock picker. T-maps are practically worthless on here, but there have been huge advances in loot in chests in dungeons. You can find decent gear in them, and chests in deep parts of dungeons can drop upwards of 8-10k gold. It requires only two skills, lockpicking to get the chests accesable, and magery to invis from monsters and recall to all the dungeons.
Then other templates like bards, tamers, and necros and paldin/samuris are great for pvm, but those might require a bit of warming up to for someone who is rusty and not familiar with how things work in AoS.
I hope that helps.
And if you need anything feel free to message ld.stn.wn, THoG, loler, Arizona II, or Pontius Pilate in game. Those are some of the characters I am on often and I am more than willing to help.

What are the gains like on the server? Are they fast gains? I know there is no anti-macro code which means I should be able to gain indefinitely in any given spot repeating the same action over and over, right? Can you gain indefinitely on one skill or by making one thing?
I guess, more to that question, is it a guranteed gain system where after a period of using the skill it will gain, regardless of what you are using?
(e.g. could I GM Tailoring by making just fancy shirts, or GM Blacksmithy by simply making katanas?)
Also, what would be a good template for a good solo PvMer? Along with that, good dungeons or areas to start training in as a way to get re-acquainted with the way things work?

In theory you could GM those tradeskills by doing that, but it would take awhile. It's better to use higher level items to get better and faster gains!
While you start your ne toon out, you get a 300+ skill deed that you can use to instantly GM a skill. If you wanted to make a char to start out and start making money right away start him out with..
50 lumber jack
50 bowyer
train 30 mage.
As for my gatherer
I started with 50 lumberjack and 50 mining, I trained 30 necromancy, 30 magery. I used my scroll to GM Lumber jack, and mining, with the 200 remaining points. I used it to GM Necro, GM Magery. 60 points left, I threw it into Spirit Speak.
So now my templates this...
GM Lumberjack,
GM Mining,
GM Necromany,
GM Magery,
60ish Spirit Speak,
Last 2 skills, take up focus, and eval int.
While you GM Spirit Speak, you'll GM Focus. Then while you GM Eval Int you can adjust your stat's accordingly to how you see fit. Since my guy is a human I went with 125 str 25 dex and 75 int.
As for a PvMer... Would prolly to be best with...
GM Necro
GM SS
GM Magery
GM Eval Int
GM Meditation
GM Resist Spells
GM Wrestling
Is a good starter, but you can replace resist and wrestling with other skills you would like.
Well, I hope this helped you out at all.
And
welcome to
Age of Valor!

The gains are faster here than on OSI, with the same skill shortening as you get near the end (Gains become slower). However, you are allowed to macro while away from the keyboard to gain skill, provided you DO NOT gather resources such as ore, fish, gems, bulk order deeds, artifacts, etc etc. This is to prevent economic flux from scripters and it's courteous to players who collect resources legitimately.
You can gain indefinitely in any spot. Age of valor does not yet have the guaranteed gain system for skills as it has a minor presence due to the skill gain here being accelerated. It will eventually be added in to avoid using the "faction trick" or satyrs' discord attack for skills such as chivalry.
Bushido/chivalry/archery is a popular pvm template as you can keep your distance and rack up damage with this template against monsters, so you don't have to worry about dying as often. The equipment start up is not too bad, but you will need money for arrows/bolts.
The anti-virtue dungeons such as despise, covetous etc in trammel are good places to start off as the monsters in there are not overly threatening and you might get lucky and snatch a 10th anniversary virtue artifact while in there.

I made a necro archer and a necro mage and both of those chars are real good at killing monsters. I recently went to Wrong and farmed the Jukas with a friend. He was there for loot and fame i was just there for fame.... I was there for anout an hour and pretty much cast EVs and animated the dead and I think I died once...
I just recently starting doing quests with my fletcher....
