Yeah, laser internet. The guy is supposed to be here between 12 and 2pm. A few weeks ago a guy called and was trying to sell me high speed internet. I had a few drinks so decided to talk to him. Its fiber optic, and its supposed to be a lot faster. Its even going to be a bit cheaper than my kinda slow internet that I have now.

But the best part was when I made the guy explain fiber optics to me. I don't even think he knew as much as I did about FO.

Me: What is fiber optics, is it like cable modem?
Him(in a strong hispanic accent): No man, its like lasers. Its real fast 'cause the light refflects.
Me: Lasers?!?
Him: Ya man, I mean its light man. Light reflects and it makes it real fast!

In my imagination I could picture a big laser gun mounted on my roof shooting the internet into space. That would be cool. Its supposed to be guaranteed 10M, and I am at about 700k right now.

Woah, how much is that costing you per month? Dedicated 10m would be enough to host a web few servers no problem.

Ya like...you can put this on your modem and the information it just zoom through by the lasers man. Your internet be so high you get instant access to downloads.

Woah thats it? I would have expected a few grand per month. Damn we're so behind here. So is fiber like mainstream where you life? Only thing fiber is used here for is the main city to city carriers, some big buildings like school board offices might have it. Usually its like 10/100mb lan extensions and what not. VERY pricy.

back about 14 years ago, when I was just starting college, there was a big deal about the fiber optic lines that were being installed around grand rapids. It was the thing of the future, back then the internet was mainly BBS and dos based. I don't know if this is the same thing, but I know the GR area has been planning ahead.

I just got it hooked up. Its fast. 9.5M up, 1.5M down. I was at 750k/250k. And its about the same price as what I was paying before.

Woah sweet! I get like 5m down (max) and 512k up lol. I can actually bump it up to around 7mb down and 700k up if I wanted to.... but I value my job. I did it for a bit. I was "testing" something.
