As a relatively new player here, I'm finding myself overwhelmed a bit. With only about 2 weeks of time into the server so far, my mates and I have decent toons, but we just can't seem to do anything worth doing. Dieing alot, etc. Not sure if it's a gear or a template problem, or just simply biting off more than we can chew. (In my case, 100 mage/necro/weaving/eval/med/wrestling/spiritspk with full 70 res armor and 100% lrc)

What did you guys do when you first started out? How'd things go for you?

try champs, those are worthwhile and you get AoAs. Don't do despise, check T2A or the lesser used fel champs. You can always make gauntlet characters.

Check out the minor quests, like the Hag or toymaker quests. Those are fun and you get some neat items.

When I got bored of the game, I made a new game. I collect heads. Thats the beauty of UO.

Which monsters are you guys fighting? Many of the monsters here have advanced AI and know how to use their skills. Mages, for example, know how to use combos and fields such as fire and poison. Many of the lesser mages also know a bit of necromancy (Particularly undead).

It was brought down a while back as it was too strong (The intensity of them casting was too high). It seems to be at a decent amount now but there's always a few monsters out there that may be harder than they're supposed to be.

Can you tell us what kind of character you're using, where abouts you're fighting and what kind of monsters you're killing?

Well, we just tried thunder's suggestion of hoppers bog...You'll all find this funny I'm sure, but like idiots we stood right next to the altar when the mobs spawned. I was on my aformentioned spellweaver mage necro, he was on a tamer/archer (mostly tamer) with a rune beetle. He died almost instantly, as did his loot bot. I got out naturally, but had a real hard time using wither or wind due to their attack speed and poison.

We tried the orc spawn, and actually had a great run through that until the scouts and brutes spawned. Brutes weren't too much hastle, but the constant rain of arrows from the scouts forced us to retreat.

We generally find time to rampage through destard and easily kill the dragons/drakes, or occasionally go pick on a balron spawn and destroy it without much difficulty, but a trip through the ML dungeons proved extremely painful down in the crystal dungeon. Tried picking on the jedi near valor, and got torn up right proper.

I also have a mage/tamer that I've been using that wasn't too bad. but with 100 cap taming and not but a white wyrm and a mare to use, I find anything outside of a standard OSI dungeon can easily overwhelm the two of us. Occasionally there's a third guy that plays on a necro warrior, but he's not usually there nor very useful when he is.

For any casting template you'll want 2/6 for casting. Necromancers do best in wraith form, casting wither because they leech all their mana back and wither does a lot of damage to numerous targets.

If you're using a spellweaver, be sure to increase your arcane focus level before leaving. Get a group of as many arcanists as you can to bring up the level of your focus. This will give more power, range and length to your spellweaving spells. Nature's fury and wildfire are excellent choices for champs and work nicely with wither. You can also use thunderstorm and essence of wind but those are less effective for damage and take longer to cast.

Orc spawn gets brutal around the end. Insanely brutal. The orc brutes are tough and the orc scouts are just annoying. At that point, it's a good idea to get melee characters to fight the brutes so they don't start tossing orc lords around.

ML Dungeons are the hardest of all the dungeons and will require a large group of players or a moderate amount of experienced players. Best one to start with is the blighted grove or twisted weald, after some experience (I wouldn't head there until you can beat a few champs as peerless can be nasty).

The crystal dungeon, the prism of light, is the worst UOML dungeon to go into as it has the most powerful monsters, is crammed in and is 1 way. It's the least forgiving of all the dungeons, even though it has a healer inside.

There are numerous places around ilshenar where you can hunt paragons and tokuno is an excellent place to get gear. Rune beetle carapace and kasa of the raj-in are two items that aren't too hard to get and fit nicely on a spellcaster template. There's a bunch of places you can go such as the fan dancer dojo, the ronin dojo, the wastelands, crane marsh etc which aren't too difficult. Stay out of the back end of yomotsu mines if you choose to go there as the yomotsu priests and elders are mean.

Thanks for the detailed reply seer, I appreciate it. I understood most of it, but a couple things flew over my head.

2/6 for casting? Could you elaborate? I haven't gotten all the slang down yet.

Oh sorry about that one. You get so used to using slang :P.

2/6 is an abbreviation used for faster casting and faster cast recovery.

Each of these properties can be found on jewelry, some weapons and some shields.

When I say 2/6 I mean:
2 Faster Casting
6 Faster Cast Recovery

Faster Casting increases the speed with which you cast a spell. So if a spell takes 7 seconds to cast, faster casting can reduce it to say, 4 seconds (Not exact values, just an estimate. The % speed I don't know off hand)

Faster Cast Recover increases your recovery time. For example, when you cast wither, there's a delay before you can cast it again. The more faster cast recovery you have, the faster you will be able to cast another spell immediately after the previous. With 6 faster cast recovery, you can cast many spells right after the other.

I compiled a list of abbreviations awhile back for player reference:

Ahhh ok, that makes sense...

Damn, this suit I've got is 1/3

Going to be hard to keep 70 resists with 100 lrc and get 2/6 I take it? Just thinkin about it makes my brain hurt heh

So, if you have two items with cast recovery 3, does that add to six? (I would assume so)

It's significantly easier to get 2/6 here than other shards because we have the earrings slot available which is an extra jewelry slot.

You'll find enough items to become 2/6 in no time. Just keep checking those corpses.

Even though champ spawns are easier here compared to other servers (only 1/2 as much mobs per tier as what default is) its still hard to do with undeveloped chars.

Best bet is probably tots and martys, you can get yourself a decent suit that way then start doing the harder stuff.

Good items to go for are things like: kasa, heart of lion, arms of tactical excellence, and of course theres the bod quests to get runics to fill in the rest. At this point don't even consider demitels or peerless unless you want to die and just see how far you get, but those are simply too hard for new players as they are meant for veterans.

There's also leviathan artifacts which you can through fishing up leviathan SOS.

No one mentioned it from what I noticed scimming through this, but LMC (lower mana cost) is very helpful. 40% is the cap.

Yamandons give the best haul for loot but are also the most dangerous. An archer is the best class to use against them. There's a couple of spots you can find them in tokuno but you may have to share with others.

Oni and Yomotsu Elders also give a decent haul but are slightly less than yamandons. Anything else has a smaller loot pack but can still drop a good item every now and then (They also drop SE weapons so if you're looking for a good tekagi, yumi or pair of sai, tokuno is a great place to hunt).

For gathering treasures of tokuno, the best place to go if you're still training up is the wastelands north of Zento (It's also known as Deathwatch Desert). Crane marsh has a ton of lizardmen you can plow through as well (Crane marsh is south of homare-jima moongate and is an easy area to fight. There's not much nasties there besides lizardmen and a few cranes).

If that's too boring and you want more of a challenge, you can activate the sleeping dragon spawn that's in the dead looking forest south of the winter's spur (From the moongate of isamu-jima, just keep heading up until you see what looks like burnt trees).

The first 2 tiers of the champ are relatively easy but you might want to step back when the revenant lion and the lesser hiryu show up.

Sounds interesting, I'll head out there and give it a shot.

Last night we ran the tortise champ, and got to tier 4 in under 20 minutes. The lich lords and rotting corpses put the brakes on us though. Was going 'ok', but painfully slow and we started loosing people. Would have done much better, but we're missing key spells/gear.

Managed to drop a Yaman but was very unimpressed with the gear. Of course it was me soloing it and it took 15 or 20 minutes, so I'm sure that tainted my opinion. I'll try a few more and see if things changed now that I've got a lord toon.

That's actually pretty good for the unholy terror champion. That champ's not the easiest because you cannot raise undead creatures to help attack. At the end it gets painfully slow because rotting corpses are the sum of all evil cause they just really, do not like to die. Undead slayer talismans and weapons/spellbooks will help increase your fire damage so you'll be able to destroy them a lot more easily. The lich lords aren't as bad in comparison but when they get in a group, then they are nasty.

You'll likely need to kill a few yamandons before getting something good. Rarely will you ever kill a monster and get a good piece of loot off it first shot. Everyone looks for some kind of loot in particular. Yamandons will probably get you there a lot faster because they have the most loot on their corpses but people have gotten good stuff on anything from lizardmen, earth elementals to yamandons and champion corpses.

Reptile or snake slayer tally, sdi, and a mage make VERY short work of the yammy.

Use a necro mage. summon daemons and use an undead slayer book or tally with a reptile slayer book or tally. Or both. Summon a daemon and invis until they group around it, use nox strike, wither. Raise the hiryus into skelly dragons. I can clear the first second and third levels solo without a problem, simply by supporting my troops :)

Sure, if you know how it's a breeze! I just like giving a warning because those hiryu like to dismount and the revenant lions have been known to teleport on top of you and inflict bleed + poison.

I die... no doubt about it. I have a lot of trouble with the last level of the spawn. Greater Hiryus are a bitch to kill and they chew through anything really fast, even a summoned DF dies in the first skull or two.
