an introduction and a couple questions

Hi all, I'm new here and been roaming around a bit trying to get my bearings again after not playing UO for a couple years. I wanted to post to say hello, and let my presence, however small, be known, lol.
I played OSI for a few years, left before the facets came into being, and then got back into it when I discovered free shards. Played a few of those on and off for the last few years.
Now for a couple questions.
1. How does one make money to start off with? I used to start out by making a tailor, buying thread and kits, make fancy shirts till I had enough to start buying the stuff I needed (house, etc) That scheme doesn't seem to work now, It seems I spend more money than I make doing this...what am I missing? I used to be able to make a load of gold off the start this way. Tips on getting started making some gold?
2. In the rules I see no AFK resource gathering, does this include say easyuo scripts for LJ and mining?
I have played on shards that will allow unattended LJ and mining scripts during off hours. Is this allowed or is this a no no?
Anyhow, glad to be here, hope to get to know some of you in the future.
oh, BTW, I have a bit of a visual disability which makes it hard for me to read the chat text on screen. If you are talking to me and I seem to be ignoring you it's just that I'm trying to make heads or tails out of what you said in the journal lol.

Make a tamer -- While young you can tame the best critters with out being attacked. Feed and toss in stable for 7 days then re feed to bond. In the mean time take another tamed critter out hunting. Tame Hiruys and the kill things easy enough and remember to use the drop command on it to take its gold. Tame some yoshi's or heck anything you can and make some gold fast.

1) Money can be a little difficult to gather as a new player. You'll probably want to gain your skill and kill stuff to get the best haul for cash. Most popular, as mentioned before, is making a tamer because once you got a good pet, you can have it take the damage for you without a large risk of you yourself getting killed.
Get a good pet and kill stuff in the tokuno islands. Some of the creatures give a decent amount of cash but stay away from those that are too hard (Yamandon, ronin, elite ninjas). Deathwatch beetles and lizardmen should be alright, and you may get a treasure of tokuno for killing them (This event was ended on OSI but on AOV it's a permanent event). The desert north of zento (Tokuno town) is generally safe.
Going to trammel dungeons like despise and covetous is also a good place to make some cash. With a good pet/skill you can kill ogre lords which give a decent amount of cash and goodies. If you're feeling up to it, killing the solen in the solen hives (Check the rune library books if you don't know where that is), is also a really good place to hunt for gold and other goodies. Just beware of solen acid, it hurts if you step on it.
If you don't feel like killing, you can always collect resources to sell. Colored boards/logs and ingots are always popular sell items that can go for quite a bit. Rare gems such as fire rubies and perfect emeralds needed to make weapons/items are also good for selling. You can even set up a player vendor at hotspots (Some people rent out their houses for vendors) to sell your goods, or you can just use the gauntlet mall forums to communicate your goods.
2) AFK resource gathering is against the rules on the shard. This is for 2 reasons: 1) It's in an attempt to keep the economy and value of items at the right value. If people afk'd things like fishing, leviathan arties would go for cheap and that doesn't help the shard. 2) Some people work hard for their items and finding out that somebody else is doing very little work and just hauling in the goods because they have an afk script going, is discouraging.
You are allowed to use macros provided you are around to watch them. If a staff member shows up and talks to you, you are expected to be at the keyboard to respond. If you do not respond, there may be consequences.

Thanks for the responses.
It's good to know the rules and where you stand with them. I agree that excess resource gathering can be a detriment to the economy.
I've never played a tamer, might be interesting to try one.
Usually, in my last experiences in UO I made the buk of my gold doing trade skill/vendoring, while killing mobs, questing and dungeon raiding where sort of a diversion for me. The trade skills are my favourite part of UO, and that's one of the reasons my WoW account is sitting idle right now, I got discouraged with the trade skill system.
Thanks for the advice!

Yeah crafting here is quite nice. You can also buy/get recipies to make artifacts as well. Though your money will probably be in enhancing stuff. It's also easier to get vendors here as rental contracts can be set as public, though I unfortunately don't see many take advantage of this by making vendor houses.
The pvm also is better then most shards as the AI is way more advanced then standard RunUO shards.
And Tom, been a while. How you been?

Bulk order deeds are done a little differently here. There's no actual "deed" you get, rather a quest where you collect the resources then you make some items and get your reward. It's a little more involved to do as opposed to gathering bods, but the rewards are better and you aren't always just looking to collect that one final bod to fill your large. Although the other bod deeds still exist, they aren't the focus of the system.

Ware reasource gathering though, be prepared to run. Here not only are oreveins and colored wood treed randomized but there is a chance that you might spawn and ele or a dryad even without a Gargoyles pick or reaper axe. While if your prepared for this it can be a good thing (25 logs or Ore of the type of ele) it can be very dangerous to a miner with no combat skills.
Just thought I would mention that before you get surprised by something and wtfpwned.

Ya, you'll want to ensure you don't afk it or you might get attacked by some nasty bees or a few angry earth eles. If you're at your keyboard, you will know to run away if something pops up as they generally aren't instant but if you're afk gathering, you'll likely pay the price. Does not happen too often, but it does happen.

lol oh right, you were the one who was getting real bad luck with bees. I thought bees were still in the game but a lower chance of getting them.

They are still in but I cut the chance by *10 (basically added another 0 to the 1/nn formula)

Bees and eles...without a gargoyle pick..that could be interesting. I can see I'll be OooOOooo quite a lot lol.
One of the reasons I'm into crafting so much is because I'm a bit slow on combat because of my poor eyesight. If I have decent warning I'm ok, pop something on me and I'm usually looking for a rez.

It doesn't happen too often so normally you don't have to worry about it. Unless you're afk scripting it, you should be fine. You may occasionally get in a bad situation and end up dead but you'll get back to your body in time if you're at your keyboard.

Best advice if you need a sec to realise whats going on, build your miner with Parry/Swords and (tactics anat heal if you wanna be serious since pickaxe is a swords wep) and get a decent resists suit. Not to hard even straight off after a lil mining and crafteing with Arms Lore and then enhancings those peiced with arms lore incluading a shield its pretty easy to make 70s suit like that. And if its a problem i got a Suit on one of my crafters that works wonders on bees, since its reflect physical damamge 74 and almost phys (an all crafted suit for those that are curious).
Oh and on a somewhat side note. They are serious about ingots fetching a good price, I'll pay top dollar for them. Check the Gauntlet mall prices for a guide to what they can go for. Also if your looking for a Vendor spot My guildmate runs what will be the biggest vendor shop in luna once I move my to vendors there.
