Ok so recently my dad started playing UO, he currently just uses characters I've built on my accounts and we go on dungeon crawls. Hes trying to collect gear of his own for a character hes training, and recently hes been chaffing at the newbie type areas. He's been playing for about a week now and has no more troouble with very basic melee/archer fights.

The basic areas we started in were Jhelhom GY (to teach him the utter basics like this is combat mode, these are bandages and such) Then we moved on to lizardmed in despise, which werre good because he got to learn somethign of how to fight swarms of critters (some areas in there have like 5-10 come at you at once). It was also good because it had some value beyond him learning basic combat, spined leather, which is good because hes building two characters of his own, 1 of which is a crafter.

Ok next we went to the lower levels of despise, Ettins/Ogres/Trolls and the small Ogre lord spawns. Now he had some difficulty with Ogre Lords, be hell I have if they blind side me while im doin Coon, too. But after a few hours of ettins, hes bored again and chafin at the reins, not to mention hes asking wtf are we doing here, theres no point to this, there is nothign worth looting, and even the gold we are getting is lame.

well the complaint about loot made me think about taking him to Destard, but Dragons can get intense when they are ganking your 3v1. So thats out.

So I took him to Ice. He got raped and died abotu 6 times on my Plastic Man Char in a 70 suit with horselord and my demon/spider slayer Vanquisher (yeah he was slayer on EVERYthing in the first area) and we didnt even make it 9 screens from the doorway. Not sure how he managed that but I think its mostly the poisin and him bein newbie enough hes not good at dodging long enough to cure, so hes complaining to me again that the loot sucks and as he put it, wtf is the point of this place, I'm getting killed and even the stuff I'm killing has nothing thats worth taking so whats the incentive to come here? Again i had no good answer for him just said we'd try somewhere else.

I figured I'd take him to Hyloth. Undead can be a pain sometimes but geneerally they are slower than most NPCs which is saying something. Again he gets iced a few more times, this time by Lichs and rotting corpses. But hes not as upset here, the loot isnt quite as bad (I knew that liches and rotting corpses have halfway decent drops, which is why we bothered with Hyloth in the first place). But he says that he doesnt quite think hes up to fighting things that can hit you with spells like that. I dont blame him, 2-3 liches can dish out some serious magic and 1 rotting corpse thing in your face makes it hard to deal with especially with the LP or DP that they hit you with that can take 1-4 tries to cure.

Ok, so at this point hes frustrated and even with me scouting this morning I cant find a decent spawn that ranges somewhere between ettins and liches en masse, I mean if there was somewhere with say a SINGLE drake spawning at a time or Maybe a single demon. or something. Preferably something that would be worth it to a fairly new player. (even if its just somethign that drops horned leather, or something to at least make the adventure seem like a productive adventure, and not a waste of his time)

I dunno if this is really the right forum, but its kinda me asking. Is there a spawn like what im asking for? If so, where? If not, Can you make one? Not anything fancy, just something of med difficulty for a newbie (Not med difficulty for you or I or any vet but for a newbie) something that either casts a few spells or weak firebreath and that has something to loot that I can point to and say "yeah it was worth the time, you just got XXX"?

I mean i'm not looking for a spawn where hes gunna pull artys off a mongbat, but maybe somethign where he can pull horned leather (he already knows that farming lizardmans = mass spined leather) or maybe where 1 out of 3 things has a loot item worth pulling (2-3 values of decent intensity), Or maybe just soemthign that drops 600+ gold. Just soemthing.

Also when hes playin I'm not generally right there with him, I come to help him when he needs it, but I'm usually afk on the char thats near him and doin stuff of my crafter. He doesn't want me hovering over him like a bodyguard, he wants to figure how to do it on his own. So part of what I was lookiing for is somethign he can handle solo. I mean I COULD take hime with me to Destard and just kill it all myself, but we tried that once, he got bored quick, died alot and felt useless, not a good recipe for getting/keeping his intrest in the game.

Tell your father its not about the loot. Its about the challenge and no reward.

I mean out of context it is what our shard is all about.

Well it'd be nice if it wasn't like that. I mean he's quite a ways from up to trying something where he stands a chance of getting anything other than maybe a ltot (I mean thats if he can avoid all the random Hiryus and ninjas, to kill birds.)

But it'd be nice if i could find him something to do that at least has the illusion of being productive, like him being about to get 300-1000 horned/barbed leather in a 3-4 hours session. (I can get that much in 20 mins at Destard, so don't anyone say that is an outrageous request).

Or somethiing, maybe something where he just get decor items that are cool for when he makes a house, I dunno something semi productive that isnt terribly difficult for him so he can learn a bit more about PvM.

Newbie areas are a thing we are looking into. We will have a newbie char beta testing from a new char's point of view and modify things.

New char or new player?

New char playtesting means nothing since prolly the player is vastly more experienced.

It's pretty much planned out I think. I know I want to add some kind of newbie arty system too, something that vets wont want to use, but something that newbies will enjoy.

On that note. My dad would prolly want to create at least one account the problem is we login off the same network and I think share an IP. Or at least I created my accounts while on his network, sometimes I login on others. but if made an account would we be flagged for exceeeding the 3 account limit? if so is there anyway we can do it so he can create his own account? he was fine using my chars to kinda get a feel for the game but hes soon probably going to want his own, but I dont wanna give up one of mine since I triple client Gaunt and Demintels to get more arty chance (not always that easy lol).

Blood dungeon has areas where there's only one daemon or blood elemental in one spot.

A lot of the dungeons (Especially the tram/fel ones) are currently, atm, spawned very very badly. This is due to events which occured during server birth where the object was to make each dungeon completely and utterly different. Dungeons such as covetous, despise, deceit and such are in good shape now because I had gone back and fixed everthing up nicely. This is my plan for pretty much every single dungeon and area in the game and such. This is also an incredibly long and painful process but thankfully I now have shadow helping me out with this project. With 2 dungeon coders, things will go much quicker than before and hopefully we'll be able to present more easy/medium level areas for you to fight in. For now, I recommend:

-Despise
-Covetous
-Deceit (Low level magic spawns like wraiths in the base floors)
-Tokuno "the waste" (AKA Deathwatch Desert. Kill hatchlings)
-Tokuno "Crane Marsh" South of Homare Jima. Bunch of lizardmen and bullfrogs.

The IP thing is actually being looked into. currently the max is hard coded to 10 accounts per IP. But I want to code a way to specify a max on a per IP basis, so for those that play all from same router, I can bump them higher.

Though 10 should be good for 3 people, as now typo/blank accounts get automatically deleted upon server reboot. Though it may take till the server wars after that for the IPs to be cleared.

But yeah I'll want to make it so I can specify a different limit per IP or even per class /24 subnet.
