According to the official IEBlog, IE 9 will finally support XHTML served with the application/xhtml+xml MIME type, which has been long delayed due to concerns with IE’s error handling.
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2010/03/16/html5-hardware-accelerated-first-ie9-platform-preview-available-for-developers.aspx (Emphasis mine) wrote: At this time, we’re looking for developer feedback on our implementation of HTML5’s parsing rules, Selection APIs, XHTML support, and inline SVG.
Of course, this doesn’t matter much because XHTML isn’t cool anymore and, even when it was, it was served with the HTML MIME type. (I can’t imagine the chaos that would ensue if every XHTML document – including this forum – were actually processed as XHTML.)
