If please, if anyone thinks a decade only starts after "1" (ex: 2011) I will shoot peanut butter in your eye and send my squirrel minions loose on you after they've sharpened their teeth on schedule 40 PVC piping!

Why wouldn't a new decade start with 1? 2010 is the tenth year in the first decade of the 2000's. The new decade won't start until 2011.

So I suppose you don’t use phrases like “the ’60s,” or perhaps you think that that decade lasted from 1961 to 1970? A decade is simply a period of ten years and can be started arbitrarily, e.g., 1975–1984. At least in the United States, “generational decades” (the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, etc.) are popular ways to divide history, and they always start on years divisible by ten. The 2000s began on 2000 and ended on 2009. It does not matter if that decade straddled the second and third millennia (see below). You are free to start your decades a year later (or two or three or four or whatever), but expect to be misunderstood. (And what would you call them?)

As an aside, a millennium is similarly arbitrary. 2001 was two millennia from 1 CE in the traditional, proleptic Gregorian calendar, and 2000 was two millennia from year 0000 in ISO 8601, an influential date and time exchange standard legally adopted by numerous countries. (ISO 8601 does not use BCE/CE notation; year 0000 is equivalent to 1 BCE, year −0001 is 2 BCE, 0001 is 1 CE, etc.) Additionally, 2011 will be two millennia from 0011 in both year numberings. In the Hebrew calendar, we are in the sixth millennium (year 5770, sometimes abbreviated to 770).

haha I remember in year 2000 people were trying to say "no, now is the real Y2K, everything will stop working in 2001! Funny stuff. Ironicly something bad DID happen in 2001 but it was not at new years eve.

Actually quite crazy that it's already been 10 years since 2000. I remember it like it was not long time ago.

Actually isn't it both? Doesn't one decade end at 2010 and also start at 2010..like AM and PM...12 midnight is the end of the PM and start of the Am...am I wrong in this?

On every digital 12-hour clock I’ve seen, AM begins on 12:00:00 AM (midnight) and ends on 11:59:59 AM, and PM begins on 12:00:00 PM (noon) and ends on 11:59:59 PM. (I have never seen a 12-hour clock that displayed fractions of a second or accounted for leap seconds.) Given that PM is Latin for “after noon,” applying it to noon itself is questionable, but that is what I was taught. No moment of time is in AM and PM. However, AM/PM notation is not used much globally, and what I was taught may simply be an American convention. While I doubt anglophone Canada differs, I also doubt that 12-hour time enjoys the same standardization as 24-hour time, which is the standard for scientific and military endeavors worldwide.

Furthermore, a decade that started on 01 January 2000 at 00:00:00 (12:00:00 AM) ended on the moment immediately prior to 01 January 2010 at 00:00:00 (12:00:00 AM), which was actually 31 December 2009 at 23:59:59.99999999… (11:59:59.999999… PM). (2009 had no leap seconds.) No moment of time is within two different days, and, therefore, no moment of time is within two different years. If we’re discussing those “generational decades,” then one ended at the very end of 2009 and another began on the very beginning of 2010. Mathematically, the first decade would be written as 2000 ≤ d₁ < 2010, and the second decade would be written as 2010 ≤ d₂ < 2020. Usually, this is what people – at least Americans – mean when they say “2000 to 2009” or “2000–2009.”
