Northerners may laugh, but this is our first major snowfall of the season. I managed to get pictures before it melted.

I'd have to find the pics of when we had so much snow, the drifting snow of the roof nearly touched the drifting snow from the ground. I could hardly see out my window.

When I first saw this topic though, I thought it was that Toronto Maple Leafs won a hockey game.

School wasn’t canceled in this county, but it was in several others.

Yesterday school was canceled for me due to 3 cm of snow... The city employees are on strike, so nothing gets plowed.

LOLOLOLOL 3cm? now THAT is a jarr. Here your lucky if they cancel over 1 foot lol. They usually cancel for freezing rain though, and thats more snow melting and hot weather, then snow. But it gets nasty.

This year our city sucks at plowing. We had freezing rain and crap like that and they did not even plow or add sand/salt for like a week.

I'm glad I live in a state where it never snows, even though snow is fun and all its cold. And I don't like being cold.

Correction: That “morning frost” was enough to cancel school in Rutherford County.

I would love to be the first person to walk on the Blue Bridge after a snowfall.

HAha that reminds me of my childhood. I used to make mini citys in the back yard. I'd have all these trails going all over, they were deep like that, if more, with igloos and stuff, and tunnels through snow banks. Fun times.

Global warming has put an end to all that though. THAT is about as much snow as we get, used to be more.

yeah i used to do stuff like that. i made a little tunnel under the snow. all by myself. now i wonder why i sat out in that hole alone digging in the snow for so long. children are crazy. i also remember christmas at my grandparents farm, they had like a mile long driveway and it was all down hill. my uncle took me up like a quarter of a mile and we went down the driveway on a sled together. haha it was awesome

Yeah I remember how fun they were.

Then there was the whole safety thing, if it collapses and such.

My rule of thumb was always, if I see blue, it means its not think enough. When the sun shines through the snow it turns sort of blue, but if theres enough thickness, then it does not go through enough so its just regular color.

A good tunnel should enable to be able to actually walk on top without it collapsing. Multi level tunnels are FTW. After freezing rain you can get very creative by using chunks of ice as bridging material to hold the snow until it hardens.

That first picture does show a light dusting - I can relate to that being significant after living in Florida for nearly four years.

Around here the 2-3+ feet of accumulated snow is finally starting to melt, much nicer to see the large snowpiles getting much smaller.

Snow tunnels are awesome. I remember at school like 30 kids would make a giant snow room in a snow bank in one recess. Good times.

And then the next day they would be broken. :[ Usually, anyways. I don't blame the people that do it, it is a lot of fun.

LOL that reminds me of when we had "cabin wars" like one group would start breaking ours so we go back and it would usually turn into fist fights. I did not live far from the school so later on that night I went and destroyed every single cabid involved. I literally leveled a whole section of the school yard lol

It was so hilarious seeing everyone's reaction that next morning's recess. It was like if a hurricane went by. I was smart enough to even level our own cabin so it did not look suspicious. I nearly got in trouble over that though, since some people were convinced it was me since I had threatned to do it in the past when they were bothering us.

That would suck, getting expelled over that LOL.

You can still do it, just show up at a elementary school recess, wearing some silly clothes. Ya know, so they don't think you're a rapist. :]

My dad lived next door to a couple of guys that died at roughly 13 after a tunnel they made in their backyard caved in.

Yeah I heard of that actually. You have to engeneer them properly with safety in mind. You don't go make a snow tunnel when the snow on top is variable and heavy. Using snow that was pushed from a snow plow is a bad candidate for snow tunnels as it is very hard packed snow but has possibilities of weaknesses.

Best to make your own hill then tunnel through it, as it wont be as solid, but if it breaks you can just stand up right through it, basically. Using a small layer of hard snow can help keep it strong but still make it safe.

Then again i remember when I DID have a tunnel in snow pushed by a tractor. It was more like a hole though, went straight down then slightly turned and came out the other side. I also remember building a tower out of big snow chunks. I could see the roof of the house.
