So now i'm grounded from my computer until school is out, because i missed some assignments. I missed A LOT less than i did last quarter too. And WoW isn't even the problem. My study habits are the problem. Taking away WoW won't do crap except piss me off. Wtf is with my parents and sucking at parenting?

Maybe it's not really a bad thing? I remember back I was in college and I got robbed, my computer, and all my cds were among the stolen items. With little else to do, sitting around the apt, I actually ended up doing my math homework far ahead of time, just to pass the time. Seriously, I almost never did my math homework in high school. I probably wouldn't have finished half that work otherwise.

I guess. Chances are they'll start being asses about it tonight or tomorrow. By being asses i mean my dad will come in and tell me that my doom is imminent and basically say "you're about to get fcked over, so prepare yourself."
Then he'll cut off my internet and make me turn off my PC.

What really ticks me off is that he wants me to give him the password to my computer and to my WoW account!!! Is he crazy!? He says he wants to "clean up" my computer and he says that if he's going to take my PC away he wants full access to it so he can do whatever he needs to do. F that. He's going to go on my computer and delete crap. He'll go on there, delete WoW and all my other programs that i like, including my non-norton anti-virus software, such as Anti-vir, Hijack This and Spybot Search & Destroy(The only programs that actually do keep my computer safe from viruses). Because of course, being an IT guy, he thinks Norton actually works. He'll also put a password on the Bios and on my account. The account password i can get around either with safe mode(if he's dumb enough to forget to put a password on the administrator account) or with software.
And my WoW account?! He'll freeze it. Which is, whatever. I can't even play so i don't care. But he'll throw up a crap-ton of parental controls and crap so when i CAN play it'll be like 1 hour on every other saturday of months divisible by 4.
There's no way i am letting him violate my personal stuff like that. My computer is like my personal...thing...idk...It's mine and I don't want him messing with it. I almost never let anybody on that computer. Not even my good friends. I built that computer with parts i either bought or got as birthday/christmas presents. It's MY computer. The only thing that is his is the internet and the money that goes into my WoW account. So fine, he can take away the internet and take away funding for my WoW. I can scrape together the money for a pre-paid card. And I can just use my neighbor's internet until college.
omg college. I can't wait. I've got over $200 saved up in cash and Fry's Electronics gift cards. So when my parents decide to get me a laptop, they've already said they'll tell me first. So I can see what model they're going to get, and add whatever money i've saved on to that, to get an even better laptop. So if i save up enough over the next year or so, i'll be able to get a REALLY nice gaming laptop for college. Meaning I get WoW. And almost every college nowadays has free wireless internet throughout the whole campus. (yeah it may be infested with viruses, but that's what my anti-virus software is for.) So the internet will be free and as long as i don't go to a school that costs 40,000 a year, i'll be able to pay $30 every 2 months for a pre-paid card.
And yeah i know, i gotta balance school and gaming. I know. The thing is, i already had a really good system planned out for getting me to do my homework. And it woulda worked. But i got grounded anyways, so the plan doesn't matter at all.
Anyways...basically...life will be a LOT better in college.

sounds like you have an addiction to this WoW. To understand your addiction you need to monitor your use. It should be addressed.

to the other points of view.

I agree totally, Your parents should not, violate your personal privacy. Meaning the computer is yours.

your parents may own the 'hydro' and the internet account, but the computer is like a 'journal' - they legally cannot violate your rights. You can of course agree, or give them permission.

Well if its YOUR computer they don't have the right to do stuff or have access. Just be sure everything is very secure, if you have passwords in a text file (such as WoW) ensure they're encrypted.

But #1, be sure you are doing your homework and stuff as priority. What this will do is make them realize they are wrong, and that you are in fact controlling your WoW urge. Avoid playing at all when they're around.

And your dad sucks at IT if he thinks Norton is good. :P

I remember when my parents were being like that to me, so I can understand where you're coming from. I would not say they are totally wrong as I don't know both sides of the story, but they are definably not approaching it right.

Like when my parents kept complaining I was always on the computer (was not my own at the time though) what they did not realize is 80% of the use was home work related. So when they limited my time my grades just did the Enron effect. "Why are your grades so low?" "well I only have 2 hours per day on the PC, and had 5 papers to write, so had to make them quick." Yeah, did not take long till I got my access back. Funny thing is they still expected me to support them on the PC with their email issues.

Well I'm moraly speaking. Parents can do whatever they want. But it does not make it ok. Like some parents abuse their kids. They're the parents, they make the decisions, nothing stops them. But its not ok. Though thats kind of an exaggeration to use to compare but you get the idea.

In the end the real way to be able to have full control is moving out, but thats not really financially possible at that age. :P Heck I'm 21 and I can't afford it yet. I'm planing to go to the bank to get an idea of what I can afford though.

That's wrong. Parents have every legal right to violate the privacy of their minor children living in the parents' home. Don't think so? Do some research.

they have the legal right. But the moral right? My computer is like a "journal." I talked to my dad and he promised me he wouldn't use my computer. But when i was talking to him i used the analogy, "It's like my Bed. I've used it for many years and if anybody else used it, it would feel wrong. It's just an invasion of personal privacy."

Oh, and Reaper, buy some razor blades, make sure they're extremely sharp. Then put them in your mouth and chew for a while. Then have a nice bag of extra salty potato chips. Afterwards, put oil in your mouth and light your bloody teeth on fire, you ignorant prick.

Red, my dad thinks norton is good because he works on computes for the indianapolis government services...or whatever they're called (the combination of the police, mayor, fire department, etc.). So they buy whatever he needs. And he can't put his trust into a freeware program off the internet. So he puts his trust into something that's nationally known, such as Norton.
Also, Red, i don't have any text files with my WoW password in it, i use the on-screen keyboard to enter in my password and username. Is there a safer way?

Scherzo, i may be slightly addicted to WoW, but not nearly as much as i used to be, and as it can be. My friend billy has a warlock, and he plays constantly. He has insanely good gear and rankings and crap and he is the raid leader for his guild. He is crazy good. But he lives off of WoW. He's super addicted to it. The only way somebody could say i'm "addicted" is that i'm addicted to being in a guild that is friendly and nice and fun. I'm in this guild now that's fantastic, and i've been there for a long time. So they made me P.R. Officer a few days ago, meaning i deal with recruitment and i help noobs out with stuff. It's an honorable position and i finally felt like i was a big part of the guild. Then a few days later, i lose my PC privilages, and wtf.

They're debating whether to let me on the Xbox 360 after 7:30 during weekdays or not. Last time i didn't have WoW and i had the Xbox after 7:30, all my homework got done. So maybe they'll allow it. So i can get my internet fix that way =P.

I don't presume to know every aspect of your situation. But since it is the parents' responsibility to discipline their children and otherwise ensure that they are brought up properly, they have a moral right to invade a child's privacy to an extent. At which point I might consider it "immoral" is entirely dependent on the circumstances of a given situation.

speaking of WoW, a while back we had an internet phone call from a business customer. His internet was slow and he's all "I play wow but I lag like crazy, this is not right, its a business, its very critical fix it now!"

People like that, I just feel like dropping their cap to like 1k/sec.

They think we have a "easy" button that interfaces with the DSLAM and magically makes DSL speed faster even on a bad conditioned line.

Back to the whole parental situation and making you cut back your comp time etc. I think the main (maybe even subconscious) point here is a health issue. It's not wow or forums or porn or whatever it is people are actually doing on the computers, it's the hours and hours of inactivity while we stare at them all day. Extended periods of this WILL catch up to you. An entire generation is slowly becoming depressed and out of breath while they run Gruul's Lair with their raiding guild rolling for badges...unbeknownst to them.

Cut back on the comp time... run 30 minutes a day and that should take some of the edge off...regarding the stress from your parents and the depletion of your physical and mental health.

Yeah I realized how bad I was. I'm in front of the computer 95% of the day at work (random running around to go fix a paper jam and such) then I get home and do the same. So I decided to join a Gym and go for 30-45min every day. I don't believe in going super long like some people do, obviously the longer the better, but as long as you do some exercise then its better then none.
