Independence for Kosovo?

Should Serbian territory be taken to give to Kosovo for its independence? Should the UN be the organization to do it? Will Kosovar independence set a precedent for other enclaves to achieve their own independence?

I would have to agree that America doesn't have the right to make Kosovo independent. Or the UN.

The article says that Serbians offered autonomy to the Albanians as long as they stayed a part of Serbia, but I can't help but wonder if the Serbians can be trusted. After all, they tried to massacre the Albanians. I certainly wouldn't trust them if I was living in Kosovo.

I don't believe the UN has, or should have, the authority to carve up a sovereign nation. And it's not like Serbia went into Kosovo without provocation. The KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) committed atrocities against Serbs (and its own ethnic Albanian muslims who disagreed with it) before and during the Serbian war in Kosovo. Though that doesn't justify the massacres and so on committed by Serbia, it makes the Kosovar side less of the helpless victim that was attacked by some evil outsiders that the media made it out to be.
Does any international body have the authority, for example, to carve up parts of California and give it to Mexico, or make Chechnya independent of Russia, or Corsica independent of France? I don't know that there are any ethnic groups, peoples, or what have you that haven't at some point had atrocities committed against them. Whatever happened to the idea of multiculturalism? I'm thinking it's a more hopeless notion all the time.
