I'd post a link to a story, but I couldn't find one that seemed appropriate. He was a very love him or hate him person, and the stories covering his death seem to reflect that. And while I fall into the later category, I don't think this is the right time to bash him.

From Wikipedia:
"On May 15, 2007, CNN and USA Today reported Falwell had been found without pulse and unconscious in his office about 10:45 am after missing a morning appointment and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," ... "He went to his office, I went to mine and they found him unresponsive." said Godwin, the executive vice president of Falwell's Liberty University.

His condition was initially reported as "gravely serious"; CPR was administered unsuccessfully. As of 2:10 pm, during a live press conference, a doctor for the hospital confirmed that Falwell had died of "cardiac arrhythmia, or sudden cardiac death." A statement issued by the hospital reported he was pronounced dead at Lynchburg General Hospital at 12:40 pm, EST. Falwell’s family, including his wife Macel and sons Jerry Falwell, Jr. and Jonathan Falwell, were with him at the hospital at the time of his death."

Falwell's funeral will take place at 1:00 PM EDT on May 22, 2007 at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Falwell's interment will be private.
Living in Lynchburg, I have to say he's done a lot of good for this town, this city is what it is because of him (including the total lack of any decent bars, musical acts, or anything fun in general), but even in his death, it's hard to ignore the hate and ignorance he has spread throughout this country. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Thomas Road, Liberty University, and the Moral Majority now that he's gone.

It all really depends on who steps to to try and take his place. One would hope whoever that is is at least a little more moderate.

Falwell is known as "controversial." Nothing is ever as "controversial" as yammering about Scripture as if, you know, it's the word of God or something.
I got that far before bursting out laughing. :P

Gah. . .Coulter. . ."Falwell was a perfected Christian" my rear-end. Whether he was a good Christian or not I don't know, but far from perfect.

Ok, I just hate the extremes on either side. Everytime they open their mouths it's mostly just hate hate hate. "Conservatives are brainwashing everyone" "Liberals are homosexuals and terrorists." "Liberals are out to destroy Christianity!" "Conservatives. . .I don't know, I just hate them!"
Well I hate you both.

Yes, an ignoramus is an ignoramus regardless what they declare their politics to be. Honestly, I don't know much about Falwell except that he was controversial.

In his later years Jerry didn't have as much pull as he used to on a national scale. Locally he practically owned this bloody town.

What he was best known for was blurring the line between church and state. He helped found the Moral Majority which essentially created the religious right, bringing a lot of Christianity into politics and government on a national scale, and brought evangelicals into the mainstream as a political force. He was also critical to the election of Ronald Reagan, the apparent benchmark by which republicans are now judged.
