33 Die in Virginia Tech Shooting

At least 32 people are confirmed dead and at least another 21 are wounded after a shooting at Virginia Tech University Monday morning, federal law enforcement officials told FOX News.

Campus police said there was only one shooter and he is now dead. They are unsure if the shooter was a student and it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.
It's actually 33 total as of right now. The worst school shooting in America.

EDIT: Ok make that the SECOND worst school shooting.

33 Die in Virginia Tech Shooting

I've read in a couple places that this is the worst campus shooting in terms of casualties, at least in the US. I've been reading up on it here and there since someone told me about it when I got to work.

I personally find it kind of strange that everyone keeps saying things like "How could this happen?" or "How could someone do this?" as if it were somehow unthinkable. I'm actually somewhat surprised that such things don't happen more often. Mind you I've never got to the point where I've felt I needed to kill someone, let alone people at random, but I don't think it's all the impossible or improbable that with all the people in this country, all the crap that goes on in people's lives that a few don't reach that point. And again my personal opinion but, I don't see how it would be that hard to go from killing a couple people to killing 34 once you've made that jump, once you have made the decision that they are not people, but rather the enemy.

But that's really what it comes down to. Your willingness to kill someone else, and the willingness of other to accept those deaths all depend the ability to dehumanize the victim - which isn't all that hard, we've been doing that throughout the course of history to justify various wars. Or should I put it the other way to show how Americans can ignore mass murder on much grander scales in other countries, only to be shocked and horrified when it could've been your child, sibling, friend, etc. when the death occurs close to home. Yes, it's unthinkable then.

EDIT: I didn't mean for this to sound so detached and negative. But I really didn't see the point in talking about how horrible the killings were and what the families of the victims must be going through. My condolences go out the the families of those have lost this day.
