First figure out why you are depresed, and whatever it is, try to fix it, or forget it. Depending on what it is, this is easier said then done. A counselor may help as well. But I'm not really the person to be considered expert at this, just giving tips of what I'd do if I was in that situation.

A side effect: Death.
Not kidding. Teens on one of the drugs have committed suicide. I think it was Zoloft.

I think depression drugs could be useful, if prescribed, but I would not just go take them and hope it makes you better. if you do, do it temporarly, like if you need to wait to seek help for w/e reason. But its NOT a solution.
Its kind of like people who smoke to relief stress. It may work, but its not really a viable solution, in the end.

There's a variety of anti-depressants. Most work by moderating seratonin levels, typically raising them. But, as people have already said here, find out what the issue is and try to fix it. You shouldn't expect that anti-depressants will work unless you have a brain chemistry problem, and thinking that popping pills every time you feel down won't help anything - not that this scenario explains the way you're thinking.... Bottom line is, don't go for it if your doc doesn't try to figure out the problem you're having and instead goes for the quick fix and starts throwing prescriptions at you.

They don't work. It's a placebo to make you think you're taking something to help you get better.
aka. something else to blame your troubles on.

They can work if you have a brain chemistry issue. However, if, for example, you murder mom or dad and feel bad about it for a long time, I don't think they'll do much for you - nor should they.

Well, I think the brain chemistry issue thing could make the pills work, but we're talking about manic depressions and mental diseases and such, yes?

cope.
# To contend or strive, especially on even terms or with success
# To contend with difficulties and act to overcome them
Dr.'s, Priests, Councillors, Study groups, Meetings will never solve your problems only guide you to cope with them.
So take your pills if you wish, they are not a miracle cure. Success is measured personally and is always Subjective. Stop comparing yourself to others identify what is your success, make a goal and achive it, then move on to another goal
