Researchers say they are rapidly closing in on new types of materials that can throw a cloak of invisibility around objects, fulfilling a fantasy that is as old as ancient myths and as young as "Star Trek" and the Harry Potter novels.

Unlike those tales of fictional invisibility, the real-life technologies usually have a catch. Nevertheless, limited forms of invisibility might be available to the military sooner than you think.

"We're very confident that at radar frequencies, these materials can be implemented on a time scale of 18 months or so," John Pendry of Imperial College London told MSNBC.com.

I can picture it now. scientists and US military around a table with a harry potter book in one hand, and a rod in the other, pointing at formulas on the chalk board. "ok according to page 73..."

rofl same here. but the tech sounds pretty realistic if you ask me. i mean, we already have ways of bending light like lasers and fiber optics and stuff, why cant we figure out how to bend the light around an object?

Interesting..but this poses a threat. The problem would be if the invisible cloak got in the wrong hands!
I mean imagine what people could do with an invisible cloak...rape, murder etc.
And in my opinion the military ARE the wrong hands!

haha ummm, it wouldnt work like that, i think its mostly so it couldnt be dectected by a scanner or radar or something, people wouldnt have a cloak they actually wear and be able to sneak up on other people and grab them without being seen

Oh right :D
Ok but still...I have a point!
It could be an advantage for us using it against another country but what if another country uses it on us..etc.

We would just develop anti-invisibility-cloak goggles.

But then so would other countries which would mean our countries would not be able to use them...ya see!
Which means there is no actual point to making them!

But they have to spend so much money matching our technology that they don't have enough money to buy bullets. So they can see us, but they can't shoot us.

the more lead fired down range determins the victor, dunno why they are makin this cloak, the army isn't about playing 'sneaky b*gger' it is about 'advance to contact' as soon as you fire you give away your position, so why have a 'sneaky coat'

running around in plastic tanks and sneaky coats isn't how I see the next war, these are more policing actions than anything.

I would say the technology for invisibility isn't as far off as most would think. they already have fabrics that change color when added heat or "electricity" is passed through them. It's just a matter of imaging what’s behind you and projecting it on the other side. I don't see soldiers in war using this maybe a sniper, but are snipers shoot from up to 1.5 miles away so you wouldn't see them anyway. Maybe on tactical information missions when there somewhere finding out information that we weren't really there. like finding weapons of mass destruction etc. I do agree that whenever a great invention is created it can always be used in the wrong hands or for the wrong reasons.

I am glad you see my point of view....inventions can be used for good or bad....but they are used much better in the wrong hands as there are so many possibilities of things to do when using it for bad reasons!

well we all know inventions can be used in the wrong hands. and if its used for bad things how can you say its being used better in the wrong hands?
