The other day

My wife made meatloaf this evening for supper. She had also made some at the beginning of last month, and I told Clueless to eat some. I told her it was the same recipe that mom had used the other day. She took exception to my use of the phrase "the other day" because it had been more than a week. I think "the other day" can refer to any day other than today, as long as it is not more than two months ago. So who is right?

i told you! when you say "the other day" it means sometime during that week, if it's more than a week then you say last week, or 2 weeks ago, it only makes sense!!

I must agree with Clueless. I tend to say “the other day” if the event happened sometime in the past seven days. Outside of that, I say “last week”, “last month”, etc.
Hopefully this disagreement distracted your father from forcing the meat loaf on you, Clueless.

Some times now im older the other day is longer ago than it was when I was younger. Days fly by so quicly with working 40+ hours a week and trying to have fun.
So I'd have to agree with bookworm that if it just seemed like the other day, why not say it.

I'd have to agree with Clueless. 'The other day' works as long as the day in discussion occurred in the last seven days.

I somewhat believe clueless..BUT..sometimes I DO catch myself saying "the other day" when it happened like....2 months before hand. So I don't know. I usually would say "the other day" when it was the day before last. so I guess it works either way.

I can say the other day for a couple weeks ago. Doesnt really bother me that much. If I really want to know when something happend then I'll ask them when exactly it happened.

My wife even thinks I should have used "a while back" rather than "the other day."
She also thinks Clueless should have eaten the meatloaf.
