A scary thought...

Hello. My name is Ashton and I just registered today so I could have a place to talk to deeper minds than all of the rednecks that surround me here in the deep south. Well anyways I had a clilling thought about human genetics(and this is based that evolution is real which I believe it is). Since humans don't exactly follow survival of the fittest because of technology and such, what will happen later in the future as technology booms and people who have 'weaker' genes are able to survive and pro-create. Many people people might start having birth defects, mental disorders, frail body types, are more succeptable to disease, etc...
This could cause bad things like more pain, death, and stress in the general world population. Discuss.

I think diseases and stuff will get worse, but the remedies for them will get better. So we'll be living more and more artificially, depending on medicine more.

When you think that stuff like flu shots are almost madotory to not catch the flu it will end up being the same with other viruses/diseases. The pre rapture will perhaps include some kind of catastrophe making it so these drugs become unavailable and lot of people will die, or perhaps diseases and such will grow immune to our drugs.

There's lot of other technological advances we depend on, perhaps too much, so at some point if it fails or becomes inadequate it could also pose serious issues.

Heck, look at oil. If the reserves do in fact run out, no one would know what to do.

Discuss. I like that.

I think that the Spanish flu will come back and kill us all. :)

Sure humans exist in a 'survival of the fittest' sort of world. However, what defines the 'fittest' changes as humanity advances. Throughout history, as humans have become more skilled farmers, scientists, ets., the acquisition of resources necessary to survival has become more efficient. As humanity advances technologically, surviving becomes easier, and individual flaws can be compensated for. Don't you think that even if humans became less able to fight off disease or had higher frequency of genetic defects that advances in genetics and medicine would counter-balance such frailties? As technology progresses, the threshold for what it takes to survive in the world becomes more all-encompassing.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was my eyeglasses. Because they allow me to see (and survive), I am able to pass on "weaker" genes. But perhaps those with "weaker" physical genes would be able to pass on stronger intellectual genes. This would perhaps allow for cures to be found, or technology to be invented to counteract the detriments. Which is basically what Stasi was saying.

you are right! also, we could begin getting stupider as our brains degenerate from less and less thinking as life gets easier with new innovations until the need to think evaporates and we are a thoughtless race, imprisoned in the cage that we made and called an easier life.

or something like that :D
