Court upholds Quebec's white margarine

OTTAWA (CP) - Quebecers will continue to eat white margarine, at least for now, after the Supreme Court rejected arguments from manufacturer Unilever which opposed provincial restrictions against the sale of yellow margarine.

The justices made their decision immediately after hearing from company lawyer Gerald Tremblay for an hour and while refusing to listen to arguments from lawyers for the Quebec government and Quebec Dairy Producers.

During a brief oral decision, Justice Louis LeBel rejected all aspects of Unilever's argument.

They therefore confirmed the rulings of the Quebec Superior Court in 1999 and the Quebec Court of Appeal in 2003 that validated the Quebec regulation which prevents the sale of margarine in the same colour as butter.

Former Liberal premier Robert Bourassa passed the rule in 1987, which at that time mirrored a measure in Ontario.

Quebec said it was designed to ensure consumers weren't confused about the products, but ultimately protected the dairy industry.

According to dairy producers, 600 farms and 3,000 jobs would be threatened if margarine took butter's yellow glow.

so basically, the superior court is saying that canadians are stupid, because they can't read the label that says 'margarine'.

Hahaha well that is funny. Show we don't have much to worry about so we have to come up with silly things like this to keep the media busy.

They need to keep on with this dairy trend, maybe they can make quebec style poutine illegal or something.

Poutine is this absolutely disgusting mix of like thick cut french fries, melted cheese, and like some kind of gravy...it almost looks like pork chop gravy or something?

I don't know, I didn't smell or taste it long enough to find out. =X

You'd fall in love the first time you try it. Hmmmm so good. Not sure how Americans do without it, and no Tim Hortons. :o

I forget what the place is called, but they make all sorts of poutines, like some with bacon in it and stuff. Never tried it, but it's a cool concept.

I built one once it was cool.. just out of snow, not ice though. it's a 2 day process at the least. 1 day to make a huge pile of snow, leave it settle overnight, the next day to dig the tunnels through it and make any reinforcements. man I miss those days. twas fun. Used to build a city in my backyard lol.

Snow has been melting like crazy lately. Some places actually have less then a foot left. But then again we did nto get lot this year, maybe like 2-3 feet. GLOBAL WARMING!!!! No seriously though, I would not be suprised. Every winter seems to be hotter and hotter, with random abnormalities only.
