Do you think this will be the end of the world? I mean, the unix epoch started in 1970, technically 1969 dec 31st, at 11:59, if you start counting from 0 seconds, and computers will not be able to produce a number big enough to calculate dates after 2040, so this will be a much larger problem them what Y2K was going to be. This problem will be real, all computer systems, including banks, newspapers, birth certificate databases, will be reset to 1970, and if the numerical value used is unsigned, the problem may be even worse, as it will go into negatives and we'll be in like 1930's.

So I think this will cause large scale chaos, and will be the start of the tribulation. And if you take 2039 and divide it by 3 (a number mentioned often in the bible, so it's not just randomly picked in the air), you get a decimal number ending with many mark of the beast's, in fact, it goes to infinity. It only makes sense.

Discuss.

btw this is to be taken somewhat humorously, I doubt the rapture will be based on unix LOL

I hope the world ends on friday, I got two projects due then and I haven't started them...

Maybe I can claim "The earth split open and the devil and millions spawns of hell came out and ate my homework"?

"All the other students had to deal with the spawns of Hell, and they got their work in."

someone's just itchin for the apocolypse. :P

I think 2039 will be like 1999. There'll be a big fuss, apocolyptic claims, a rush on coders that still know unix, but when the clock strikes midnight, a few computers will have a few problems, but all in all it will be an uneventful evening.

Unless we're all using 64-bit based computers, we'll be screwed in 2039, unless *gasp* they change the unix epoch and break the seal of significance of 1970. (why did they pick that date anyway? they did not even have electronic computers then, let alone unix and open source.)

I'll be 77 in 2039. Just in time for Social Security to go bankrupt.

Nice timing on your part. When the world ends, you'll have no money

Yeah since they'll think you're like -77 because all the date computers will screw up time and the unix time stamp will be like -32424

Actually I often ponder on this, I wonder if they have something prepared for this, since unlike Y2K this one is a reality unless something is done. It won't stop power plants from generating electricity, and stop gas from being combustible, like Y2K people suggested but it will be chaos in terms of date-related stuff. Stocks will also completely screw up, either skyrocket for no aparant reason or drop like crazy. (I assume they somewhat work on a basis of date, such as how much profit the company made in X time)

But we may also be using 64-bit computers by then.

Great, and I'll be 54 then, so I'll probably be working for IT in some huge company and be responsible for patching over thousands of computers to the new dating system. Oh the pain!

One of the ancient Mexican religions (I think it was the Mayans, but don't quote me on that) believed that the world would end on December 22, 2012. Exactly.

So I'm just counting down the days.

Hmmm the unix time stamp at that point will be 1356134400
If you take off the 1356, leave the 1, then take off the 3, you get 14400 which is mentioned in the Bible, oh, and you need to add another 0.

Or you'll be in prison for hacking the Pentagon, and the authorities will come to you to fix the unix problem, but you'll refuse to do it unless they give you your freedom and a large pepperoni pizza.

Haha could happen. Well if ever the Canada goverment pisses me off I might go out of control and crash the servers. Sad part is, I could easly bring down our goverment's technological infrastructure within 5 minutes with telnet. They run IIS. :o When I thought our goverment was smart, I then realized most of their servers run IIS. How could they. :o IIS is considered a webserver, but really it classifies as a trojan.

Hey, looks like they finally got smarter.

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2005 04:34:08 GMT
Server: Apache
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/html

Only tried the main site though, not sure about the other goverment branches since I did not try.
