Im just wondering if anyone round here has much experince setting up wireless grids? Ive got a linksys WAG54G (Sharing adsl) and a WRT54G (Repeating using custom firmware) using WDS with WEP 128 between them, but I really want to find a solution that uses WPA. I can set up the WRT54G as a wireless client to the WAG54G using WPA-PSK w/TKIP/AES, but then I cant share it out :(

Anyways, any tips on how I can improve the security, or set it up better would bve great...

Umm...I'd have to know what type of settings your router has in order to know what's wrong there...you probably just don't have it configured properly if you're unable to share after setting it up...you tried Linksys customer support? One thing you can try is installing windows zero wireless configuration thingy, or whatever it's called, if you have XP and haven't installed it. I'm not sure if it's available for 2000 or not.

Also, what are the NIC cards on these pc's you're trying to share to? Are they wireless, as well? You know, only newer NIC cards are compatible with WPA, if I remember correctly.

As for added security, make sure you don't allow more dhcp users than computers you own and keep on. I think Linksys defaults to like 50 or something, turn it down to whatever number of computers you have on a regular basis.

I've never seen a wireless router that didn't have MAC address filtering, so check to see if yours does...if so, utilize it.

Of course, a software firewall.

Changing your SSID from the default name to something unique.

There's like a bunch of things you could try, really.

ahh, nm about this topic; it seems the WDS protocol wont allow you to WPA, only WEP, which is what im using anyway. Ive got no probs with reception, because ive got custom firmware boosting the signal from 24mw to 251mw :P I dont want to MAC lock, because I have to add MACs when friends come over, which defeats the convienience of having wireless. So, it looks like it is as good as its gonna get, at least till a better distribution system comes along...
