Soon to be on Dedicated server

I posted this earyler in the off topic section but thought I would make it more official. We are going dedicated. I've ordered the server and simply waiting for an order confirmation and the server info and I'll be able to start configuring it and getting the shard ready for a move. I will probably code the donation system in the next few days as well.

For those curious the server specs are:

Intel Pentium 2.8
HDD: 80GB Hard Drive
Bandwidth: 750 GB Bandwidth
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Version 4
RAM: 1024 MB RAM
CPU: P4 2.8GHz ValueLine
Uplink Port Speed: 10 Mbps Uplink

Most of this is upgradable. I'll start with this, and see how far it brings us, then upgrade as needed. I can't wait to receive the server info so I can start working on this.

Oh it's still windows, but the server will be Linux, and run VMware Server with a windows installation as a VM. It's our current setup, but on a low end connection, and maxed out server. I don't feel comfortable managing a remote Windows server due to the security issues of having RDP wide open like that, so I'm going Linux, and I can tunnel through to access the VM console. It will be bloody slow to manage, but it will work. This slightly increases world saves but general operation should be ok. Though in our case world saves will be a bit lower by maybe a fraction of a second due to the server upgrade.

I'm still waiting on it, guessing they don't work weekends so I'll probably get it Monday, but then I got college so not much time to work on it. :P Installing VMware is a task on it's own.

I also seem to have found out bad news about DNS. I heard it's not recommended to run the DNS on the same server, so I'm looking into why, and if I should really worry or not about it.

Hung up, was taking WAY too long. I might try again another time. I have this huge nasty assignment to do for tomorow so that will waste most of my night.

Called again, and got to someone right away instead of being transfered twice only to be put on hold until Toronto Maple Leafs wins the cup.

I cancelled my order, because they seem to have changed their packages, or I simply missed this one, for only a tad more expensive, and WAY cheaper setup fee:

P4 3Ghz
80GB drive
1GB of ram
10mbps uplink
And most importantly: 1500GB of bandwidth

It's the bandwidth and the extra Ghz that caught my attention the most. It's about 30 bucks per month more expensive, but 200 or so less for setup since most of the stuff I added on the other package is included in this one.

So I'm hoping by Friday it's all setup and shows sign of dent on my Visa so I can start setting this baby up!

Wow this account was handled much better. I got a message to call back, so I did, and it should be ready in 24-48 hours and I'll receive a confirmation email. So this is perfect as I have Friday night to set it all up.

WOOT! Server is ready and running. Now for the fun part of configuring everything! I'll start with VMware given that is the most likely step to totally botch the server if anything goes wrong since it involves recompiling the kernel. Then I'll worry about web, email, and all that fun stuff. I'll also have to do security too if we want to stay online for more than a day. :P

When I feel inclined to I'll point the DNS of uovalor.com over to the new server, so there may be some downtime of the site. Also everyone will have to change the IP in razor to log on the new server but I'll give everyone a chance to do that by leaving the old server running but simply point to the new one. Lot of work to be done so it may take a few days to get everything setup. But my priority at the moment is runuo, then I'll worry about web/email.

There will also be periods of mass lag as I upload data to the server.

Still in the progress of configuring the VM and the guest OS for Runuo. Going rather smooth so far, just very slow to configure over a remote connection.

Installing service pack/updates right now, managed to make a communication to the outside world from within the VM itself, that was quite an accomplishment but was a silly mistake of me configuring the wrong default gateway on the virtual nic. Yes I know I'm a noob and I suck at life and at uo and I should just go back to trammel. (e. talk)

I don't expect the shard to be on the new server by tonight given this is going slow but by tomorrow for sure. To stay simple I'll simply redirect the current Runuo to the new IP once I have it setup and post the official url once DNS is all set and stuff. I'll have to move this site as well as all my other sites so there may be periods of downtime during DNS propagation.

Having an FTP issue that I'm trying to solve. FTP server behind NAT + ftp client behind NAT = huge head ache.

Had to go to bed, and I got up a bit late so I missed the bus I'm debating on if I should skip class to work on this. Every minute that this server is not up is costing me, so to me it's way more important then some 4 hour lecture in which all I'll think about is the server anyway.

I still need to figure out ftp, it's such a screwed up protocol when it comes to NAT setups. What I may end up doing is just writing a cmd script on the windows side to "pull" and "push" data to the host pc via ftp which should work, but will be more tedious to use. But as long as I have a half decent way to do updates it will do. Though if I can find a method to directly connect to it, it will go much faster and less overhead.

Just an update. I managed to get a windows version of open SSH installed, so I will be able to use that do do my file transfers for when I do shard updates and manual backups.

As for auto backups I should be able to FTP from the VM to the host machine so I can run a daily backup job. I also want to see if the host can image the machine to keep an archive in case something were to go wrong, at least they could restore that image. But not sure if they do that or not.

Well bad news. It's totally unplayable, I don't know why. Same VMware setup, but better network and better server, but the lag is just unbearable, and that's with like 2 people on. I tested before patching, so the last hope is to patch and see. If it's still unplayable, then I'll have to look into completely different alternative, like sphere or sunuo. Meanwhile the server will remain on the current host, which at least can handle under 10 people without issues.

Though another difference is the fact that I used win2k instead of win2k3, perhaps win2k3 is actually better. So I may try to upload the VM and see, but we're talking an insane amount of data here. Would take like 2 weeks to upload that with my connection.

So basically, don't expect any change soon, keep playing on the current server as is, I may even continue doing updates and adding stuff. Worse comes to worse, I will use a different UO emu but if it comes to that, I promise everyone will get a LOT of stuff in return, since we all know how starting over can suck. The main options are sunuo and sphere. I may also look into trying to make .net 2 work in Linux, there may be a way that I don't know of.

I had the IP posted here for a bit, and we already got people from several countries trying to hack in. Removed it. Basically every part of the server from web, email to the UO portion is not working. I opened myself a huge can of worms, sorry guys but the shard will have to stay on my home server till all this stuff is sorted out, and it seems I'll need a sophisticated firewall considering we're already under attack.

UPDATE:
I never really gave good background info on all of this so here goes. I own a couple sites and they are on shard hosting. If I was going to pay for a dedicated server I wanted it to be Linux so I can move my sites to it. (Linux > Windows for hosting) then I found out my VMware idea did not work as well on this dedicated server then it does at my house. (unsure why) as the shard was too laggy. So I decided to leave it behind and start working on transferring my sites and configuring the server on the linux side.

Then it came to me, this is WAY more work then I'm ready for, to completely manage my own host. Email is rather complex to get working with multiple domains, got to consider backups, disaster recovery, security, etc etc etc....

Put it this way a 20/mo webhost is WORTH the money. I'm keeping it. So what does this mean? Considering I paid the setup fee and monthly fee for this server I can't just scrap the idea. So I'm getting the data center to reload and put windows which will cost a bit more, but the shard will basically have it's completely dedicated server and I really can't see why there would be a lag issue now. At first this server may be a waste but I really want to push for the shard to grow and I think there is the potential.

As a regular player I may not be in the game as much as to start working on stuff like the donation system and Iceteks articles to boost my ad income so I can pay for this, and donations will help as well.

You don't know how much I prayed for plan B to work, and it did.

Image

Now time to load up the official server, and redirect the old to the new!

Server currently down for this change over. Still keep your fingers crossed since if something can go wrong and cause the same effect as plan A, it would be now. But I'm sure we'll be ok.
