A US man has been jailed for six months for a 2001 attack on the web systems of space agency NASA which cost $200,000 to fix.

Gregory Aaron Herns, 21, from Portland, Oregon, hacked into the network at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center to store movies he had downloaded. The intrusion caused systems to crash and took technicians hours to fix, according to reports. In court last Friday, Herns admitted his guilt and apologised for the inconvenience he caused.

A man hacks into NASA. And you know what he does? HE STORES MOVIES

LOL why hack into a high security network just for that? lol. But you'd think that after 3 years they'd let it go. I find they're too harsh on this, when they should be harsher on murder.

And $200,000 to fix? I wonder if they exagerate when they say that, since I don't get why it costs so much to patch a security hole and delete a few .mpeg files.

Well, when the network is compromised for a big agency, especially a government one, they probably have to hire a bunch of consultants to once over things. If there's one hole, gotta check for others.

You also have to factor in work lost while the system was down.
