AF - Closing Down?

Due to lack of activity, funds, interest in this site, and personal interests, I am seeing the closure of The Anything Forums imminent.

If you would like to see the site keep on running, the only other alternative is if anyone else is willing to assume my position and host this site on their own. If anyone is interested, please contact me.

(Would place in the announcements area but this forum receives more views)

I would offer to help but I don't see how I could exactly. It's not like I got cash to spare.. or any cash for that matter.

That reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where Elaine was in the bathroom stall that had no tp.

"You mean you can't even spare a square??!!"

"Sorry, no, I haven't a square to spare."

Somebody buy the seasons 1-3 dvd for me off my amazon.com wishlish and I'll love you forever.

I guess a little more on-topic, my first question would be...how much does this cost?

The current cost is about $330 a year plus of course, refreshing the domain.

The end of an era...

I can't afford to help out, and I'm guessing that banner ads are out of the question.
I suppose that if no one can help out, we can set up something here and notify everyone (http://www.proboards.com/index.html)

$330+!! :eek2:

Hi, Mr. Moneybags, how have you afforded that all this time!!!

Yeah, unless someone here is willing to put in a lot of effort for advertising or something, I don't see anyone having the ability to pay that.

SORRY, RESOURCES ARE SCARCE. ;X

Would everyone be willing to migrate to a free board, and maybe MrSelf (the only one that has volunteered :P) could just pay for the domain name and forwarding? It would definately be a helluva lot cheaper than 330...

I'm unsure how much the domain costs to renew and whatnot, but here is a cheap url forwarding service:

If worse comes to worse we could all move over to my forum....

Also I would be willing to host AF, but how much bandwidth are we talking about here? And even if I do, not sure how long I could for, maybe a comple of year max (though once I learn more about linux and have the cash flow I'll be going dedicated)

I'd also have to see if I can have 2 domains on my curent host, and how it works.

And google ads should work here, we just need to make the urls google friendly, and last time I tried that here the host did not allow it. (mod_rewrite is not installed). I make more then 300 bucks a month off google ads so I'm sure this place could to. Just another option.

Yes, once we have those ads, we'll be raking in all sorts of cash, plus who knows what type of friendly new people those ads will attract to the forums?

Actually google adsense is just text (well you can have graphics but google is strict on the content).

They pay my site easly, and it's because of them that I renewed the domain for 10 years. :D

I need to think about this plan of action but it may work.

I can host the site on my host, modify it allot so google can spider it, and put google ads that only guests see. (probably more effective for CTR) and go from there. The money should be able to pay the site and domain, eventually. Though we would need something other then the forum, so that it attracts people more.

I need to think this over more and see if I decide to infact take it. It will involve me paying more for hosting, or getting a new package altogether since I used 20GB of bandwidth this month... and well, we're about half way so that means about 40GB per month and I have 50GB. I never realized how borderline I was going.... So if I do host it definatly I'll need to pay for more bandwidth, though I could afford it, as long as the generated cash from the ads would pay it I'd be fine with that, and I think it would.

Damn, I don't know what's going on but I'd be willing to fork over some cash to keep AF up and running. Or willing to just transfer to another (preferably free) site or url. But with almost 200 members here, you would think we'd be able to come up with something. 11 people at $30 a year = $330 bucks a year! ^_^

The method I said (free board but pay for the domain and just use url forwarding, which may be provided with the domain for free) would cost each person, at most, about 3-4 bucks a year :D

and when is all of this going down, i.e. when might we need to start actually worrying about the AF not being here?

at this point in time it is using very little bandwidth, only 500 mbs per month, but the highest the AF has ever gotten to was 5 GB one month.

Well then, I don't see why I can't take over the hosting if no one else wants to, or can. And I would surely be willing to pitch in for, if not cover completely, the domain name. But I bet we could collect a little for that.
