Some random links I ran across while looking up some info. It's all old news, and no doubt some of it will be eventually proven wrong, but there is still some interesting information contained within.
Hobbit-like human found
Current Early Human Phylogeny
Obvioulsy biased(for our creationist friends) article on discovering ancient ape

Hey Mrself, have you heard anything about this "first Mammal" they've now discovered. They discribe it as a primitive "shrew-like" creature that is like the first mammalian ancestor of every living creature on the planet today. Thing is, they haven't found any actual evidence of it, they've just used computers to break down the DNA codes of a selected few mammals or something like that, anyway instead of pridicting variations in DNA for the future, they used these computers to track the changes in DNA throughout history and came up with this "first mammal" animal. Craziest part I thought, was that they said they could predict this kind of thing with
98% accuracy! Damn. That's almost scary.

Yeah, I've heard that before. My understanding is that they took the info like you said, and ran it through a bunch of probability equations to come up with the possible outcomes(statistics and probability is great!
). This has been search after for a while, I'm not sure of time, but I would bet since around the introduction of Darwinism. The only thing though is that it would be 98% accuracy assuming that we did come from one animal, but it can't prove that part
