Do a search for adaware, spybot. These two apps will help get rid of spyware. hijackthis is also good for getting rid of hijacks. For a firewall I use tiny personal firewall which has served me well for a while.

Do a clean install of XP if you haven't already, that'll help.

Dell puts a lot of crap you don't need.

If you want to have a faster Internet experience, try downloading an alternative browser (i.e. not Internet Explorer) such as Firefox or Opera. They feel faster than IE for me, and I can assure you I’m not alone.

(I think I should be slapped very hard.)

Try a different browser besides IE?

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but...try http://www.pcpitstop.com and run their full test. See what it tells you, because without looking at your system, I don't think anyone will be able to help much.

Their forums suck, but you can try there. Just make sure you take any advice given with a grain of salt.

Unless you are on a sodium-restricted diet. :D

RAM is a very cheap way to speed up your system if you don’t have enough already. You should want at least 256MB with XP, but I would recommend at least 512MB.

excellent advice but one small addition: check the technical specs on the Dell website for the maximum memory the motherboard will hold and just what kind it is (PC100, PC133, DDR2100, etc)

Which model Dell is this?

It should say on your system case somewhere. 4200, 8200, something like that.

PS. Crucial.com is also a good way to tell what kind/how much memory your computer uses. Just follow the menu thingies with your brand and model and it'll do all the legwork for you. :tongue2:

that crossed my mind earlier (before getting lost and dying a premature death when it ran into the few indelible impressions left from viewing 'Tak Does Tennessee Vol. XXVII' ) but my fingers refrain from typing the easy 'cheating' methods like that.
