Yes it is possible. I can stream from apples trailer site .mov, and 99% of the web sites out there with the acception of things like MSN broadband video's. They check for IE and Media Player if you don';t have them you don't even get access to the files.
Install the the win32 codecs, xineui, libxine, then download and install kaffeine.
Here's the deal, you need the codecs installed first so xine can pick up on them during it's install, then kaffeine uses xine's libraries and some of its own wrappers for the streaming. To make a long story short it works great.
The mplayer plugin will work in mozilla and mplayer but isn't quite as nice as kaffeine. kaffeine has a save button, that will let you save anything it can stream to your hard drive.
