I noticed even in a 100% dark picture, my camera always has these dots all over it, it looks like a picture of space, but it's not, it was taken in complete darkness.

I cleaned the lense with alcohol and it still the exact same dots, they are not even different. Is this what I think it is? Could it be the chip inside that's messed up?

yes, there may be minor damage to the CCD chip that captures the picture. Have you dropped the camera on hard floors, banged it(notthatwayyoupervs), or sat on it?

ouch. that's what I was scarred of but I guess it's in fact that. I don't remember dropping it though.. but I guess the only way to fix that is to get a new ccd chip which probably costs a fortune.

Red thats noise from the CCD chip that gets recorded with the pictures, its most visible on solid colors like dark and night shots. Also at high ISO's its very easy to see. It getting very bad on 8MP cameras due to the size of the sensor compared to the photo, when you pack eletronics so tighly together there is always going to be more eletronic cross talk. Digital SLR cameras have far larger CCD chips than the P&S ones hence you will see less noise on pictures taken with them plus some even have noise reduction soft/hard ware built into them to reduce it even further.

So there's no way to fix it then? I don't know if it's always been like that.

I took a picture of the sky once and I probably thought those were the stars when really it was that.

What ISO are you using? The lower the ISO the lower the noise, other than that there is no fix on the camera but software like neat image can help.

Not sure, it's set to auto. But I only really notice it on dark images at high reselution. (3.1mp)

ummm that could explain it in dark areas in auto your camera may use a very high ISO to capture as much light as it can but if there isnt any light all your going to see is noise from the CCD chip.

I set the iso to 100 (lowest it goes, I only have 100 200 300 and 400 as options) and it seems to be much better. This is a pic that was taken in darkness with lense covered with something flat to make sure no light gets in and I had to rise the brightness level very high in order to see the noise.

Also normal pics are actually nicer now.. not blured as much. Even without the flash. So thanks for the tip.

yup you camera looks like it need some help Sorry either live with it or trash it.
