Fall From Cellular Tower In Timmins Kills Quebec M

UPDATER: August 27, 2010 - 10:20 A.M. TIMMINS - Timmins Police Service News Release: "On the 26th of August 2010 at approximately 6:13 p.m. officers from the Timmins Police Service attended 220 Goldmine Road in regards to an industrial accident involving a male worker falling 31 metres from a telecommunications pole at that location. A 26 year old male from Quebec sustained injuries that were fatal.

The Ministry of Labour was called in to conduct a complete investigation into the incident. The Criminal Investigations Division of the Timmins Police Service is assisting with that investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled in Sudbury on the 27th of August 2010.

UPDATER - Aug. 26, 2010 - 8:10 P.M. TIMMINS - Timmins Police Service has confirmed an industrial death has occurred at the site of a communications tower on Gold Mine Road.

Aug.26,2010 7:10 p.m. TIMMINS - Timmins Police Service and the Ontario Ministry of Labour are investigating what appears to be an industrial fatal accident at the site of a cellular telephone communications tower on Gold Mine Road. It's believed the tower is owned by Northern Tel.

Emergency services were called out around 6:15 p.m. after the 9-1-1 dispatch centre received a call from a worker who advised that a man, another worker, fell from a communications tower. The victim was described as having no vital signs.

Minutes after paramedics and police arrived on the scene, it was determined that the ambulance was not required. Police immediately cordoned off the scene with yellow tape. Firefighters who arrived to lend assistance were told they were not needed.

A person familiar with communication tower procedures advised that tower workers must be wearing fall-arrest equipment at all times while working on a tower. It is not known if the accident victim had such equipment.

Police at the tower site were seen interviewing a worker in coveralls.

Ouch, that's a long way down. I've always thought of how fun it could be to go up one of those though. Awesome view I bet.

31 meters? whats that?

how many feet is it. if they are like the towers here it must be close to 300 feet.

a fall from that high most the people will die before they hit the ground cause of the thought of the hitting will do them in.

sad when anything like this happens but he had to have on the climbing gear. i'll bet his job at that time required him to reach some place the gear would not let him.

31 meters is about 100 feet.

Supposed to have equipment on at what? Anything over 10 feet.... Feel bad for the guy but unless the equipment failed it's most likely his fault and his supervisor for not ensuring he was working safe to begin with

If as you say he didn't have the right equipment it's his responsibility to refuse to work that job untill conditions are safe

Yep about 100 feet. Quite the fall. Have to consider he was probably hitting stuff on the way down, but he probably got a heart attack before that.

I've always thought of how fun it would be to climb one of those though. If ever I get the chance to try, I'd do it. They would not let someone up there just for fun though. I'm pretty sure they have to turn off lot of the equipment so you don't get fried. The microwave stuff especially.

I'm hoping they release more info on the cause, curious to know. I'm guessing it's a safety procedure that was forgotten, or not properly in place.
