Cdrom's Differences of music/data difference for newbies to understand

It is most important that you first realize that only one cdrom disk is used.
for both styles.
You will see two different types in the stores to buy.

One will say music, the other will say data, back up CD, or just be blank.
That is a little trick to get more money out of you.

The Record Company's known as RIAA came up with that trick, They get a percentage of the money paid, to buy those cdroms labeled music.

They figure if you are going to get music from on line and burn it.
And then give it to people for free, they will get you to pay for it by buying the music CD disks.

That is the only reason the disks have the word music on them.
Nothing is done to make the disks different except print that word music on it.


Okay here is the best way for someone to understand the difference
in the two styles of cdroms used for music.

1. First the music cdrom.
This is a style of cdrom that is best thought of as the old style vinyl
records. Using that line of thought you can understand what it is.

The vinyl records have two sides with grooves in for the songs.
Each side is about 30 minutes in length of music.

The music style of cdrom is one sided and has laser light grooves in it
that are 80 minutes long. So it uses a laser instead of the needle like
the turntables do. this style of cdrom is called Audio,.

2. Second the data music cdrom
This is a style of cdrom that is best thought of as the storage case for
your old style vinyl record albums.
Meaning that it holds the album with all the songs on so you can get
more then 80 minutes of music.
This is done by putting files on the cdrom just like saving files on your
hard drive.

Now that you know the differences you must know that only the first
style will work in all cdrom players either in the computer and or the
automobiles.
For the reason it is like the old vinyl and does not need huge amounts
of code for the player to see the songs.
It just guides the laser light along the groove and reads
the bumps / dots and dashes to play the songs.

The second one has to have more codes in the player's computer system
to be able to open the album case and read the song file.
Now some of the cdrom players do have the extra code and can see
the data cdroms, but if you try one of this style and it does not play.
Then it more likely is because the player does not have the extra code.

That is the best way I can say the difference between the two styles.

However, I do think you should point out that you can use the exact same type of disk for both of these. I've had people ask me various times, "Well.... I don't need to use data disks.... I just want music disks!", or "I can only burn music disks... I can't burn MP3 disks!"

I thought I did that but after looking I see I forgot that bit of info. I was thinking about the one cdrom disk using both styles. Does that count?

Holy crap, really? That's a little messed up, I'd say.

But definitely a useful article. I find there are actually a lot of people who don't know why/how/or even what when it comes to these types of things.

yep when they first came on the scene a few years ago i was wondering what the difference was in the two of them.
i picked up a pack of each data and music both made by the same company. both had the same label on the packages.
only one little block of text stood out on the music package label.

" A portion of the taxes on this product will go to the RIAA "
thats all it said and that was enough to make me put it back on the shelf. theres no reason for doing that other then they got money grubbing fingers and tried to get more of my money i don't have to waste. so why pay them twice for songs i already bought. sure it was tax's for the cdroms. but it was only on the music ones that they were allowed to get part of it. and it was the exact amount of the higher price for the package. so the store and the state were not losing anything only the riaa was getting some on that package. the data package was the exact price amount cheaper. which just confirmed it was only going to the riaa. i don't care if it was only 1 dollar or so for 30 disks that they were getting. its the principle of the matter they want to make you pay twice and steel some of your money,

did you also know they forced all the artists that write songs, to give up their copyrights to the songs that were recorded under contract to the riaa company's? even the older songs back about 35 to 50 years previous. if the family wanted them then they had to buy them.

hank jr. and the other rich singers were able to buy all theirs back and hank even got all his dad's copyrights back.
but the new songs are not owned by the songwriters anymore, unless they can find some small record company that does not go along with the bigger ones. but the smaller ones are all too small to make enough records for the big artists. so the songs are being wrote with more repeating of lyrics and longer music licks and less brain power. the riaa company's are getting the crap songs for the most part.

i think the country artists that were most popular have been able to redo their contracts and get some pull back on their songs but not many.

I thought the artists were benefiting from companies like itunes and zune? I mean tbh I dont follow this sort of thing much. So please, put up an article Keith, if you have time, Id like to read more about this. I think it would make a really neat article as well, and you've definitely already done some research on this this topic.

benifiting? ha no they only get what the record company contract says they are paid. nothing more.

unless they have their own album presser or burner and make their own to sale. but that would even have to be in the contract. which it is. most contracts require so many songs or albums a year by the artists.

that does not mean they can not make more then the limit asked for, and keep them to their selves to sale at their concerts.

Conway twitty did that. the Beatles did that and i think they were the first to do it.
Elvis controlled all his recordings.
which by the way his were all in digital when the equipment was first made and cost the most. he was the only one that could afford to buy it so he did.
so since about the late 60's all his was made in digital not analog.

as for doing any large amount of research on it? no i just keep my ears open and watch the news on as many channels as i can find news on.
they say little comments of what the riaa does most the time its like the last comment or the one just before the commercials

every now and then i get something from a magazine article.

and as for making an article i thought the first post in this thread was good enough just for newbies to learn from and sent it to red. but he said it would work better in the forum so here it is. and i think he was right more might find it here.
