Win XP Folder Properties Problem

When I right click only on a folder, not on a file, hard drive, or desktop , from Windows XP
professional SP2 and select properties it can take around
30 seconds for the properties screen to appear. The
computer does not crash, but I cannot think on what could
be causing this.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing
this? SP1 appeared to have the same problem.

Thanks for any help

no idea? but i know you can go to micorsoft dot com slash downloads and look for the xp sp3 rc 2 refresh and download that to help fix things and sp 3 is to make it run faster. only be on a cable or dsl connection, the file is over 330 mb's, you must be on a legal copy of xp also.

but i have noticed some slowdowns on other things beside the right clicks. i get slowdowns on start ups even if i set my cache to run faster then the programs it still loads really slow.

:awesome: update to above link.

http://www.majorgeeks.com now has the xp sp3 final release linked on their site as of april 23rd,

i did a search on microsft for the rc 2 refresh and could not find it on their servers.

so the final listed at majorgeeks should be the one to get. :yo:

I have the same problem but only with files on my desktop. I've seen some people have this problem where it takes like 20 minutes. Not sure what it is though, I think it may have to do with the buildup of junk that ends up being added by various programs in the context menues. That stuff is not easy to remove unfortunatly.

Under Folder Options-view-uncheck 'automatically search for network folders & printers'

Download ShellExView :grade11math:

Also you can try OpenWithView

OpenWithView is a small utility that displays the list of all available applications in the 'Open With' dialog-box of Windows, and allows you to easily disable/enable the applications in the list. When application is disabled, it won't be displayed in the 'Other Programs' section of the 'Open With' dialog-box.
This utility can be useful if your 'Open With' window displays too much applications, and you want to remove the applications that you don't use frequently.

Both are FREE

Just checked out shellexview, been wanting to find such program for a while.

It's insane how much faster my PC is just by removing context menu entries. It's retarded that a few menu entries can slow things down so badly. :o What does it do, load all those DLLS each time you right click? LOL (somehow, I would not be surprised, its MS after all, defficiency is their middle name)

Yeah--It helped me by just disabling all the Media Player context items.

I just installed Quickbooks and you should have seen the horror that turned out to be.

It needs .net framework to work and even if you already have it installed, the Quickbooks installer installs it anyway, there by corrupting your initial .net install, then the install quits with an error saying 'uuum--you need to have .net installed'

I worked on it for HOURS uninstalling & reinstalling .net & running all these registry cleaners--nothing helped.

Finnally, I found a program on the web that totally wipes out any & all installed anything of .net framework:

.net cleanup tool

I ran it went to install Quickbooks & it worked immediately.

Unreal :P

i don't get it? i just don't get it?

you two have been around for ever on computers like win3.1 or so.

why don' t you have the free version of the xteq program this allows you to remove any thing from the context menu and i believe tweakui for xp, also has some options for removing things from the context menus.

i've had things removed from there for years. :)

:roflmao2:

http://www.xteq.com

was its website you should beable to get to any new site for it from there, i don't know if they still offer free vesion or not, but they do still have updates for the plugins it uses. and for a scripter like you they have sdk package you can write your own plugins for tweaks and submit them.

:awesome:
