Hey Squirrel, long time no see! Didn't realize you live in timmins.. I would have hooked you up with some discounted internet while i was working for one of the ISPs up there.

Question for you or anyone reading. Looking for (if it exists) cable+application that would take video (via VGA) converted to USB, which could be pulled up on another system, in my case, laptop. With the line of work i'm in now, it is always possible to get a monitor, sometimes it can be pretty impractical, as disconnecting a monitor from a server, leaves potential to bigger problems if cables are knocked loose. My other option is to use small LCD with VGA adapter, but would be awkward to carry in toolkit.

Seen of or heard of anything?

check online stores for video capture devices of usb and or firewire.
you should beable to get a cable from one computer to another computer and view the screen in a little capture window.

the firewire is better image for now. but usb 3 is coming out in about a year i think?

that is to be 3 times faster then usb 2.

but i use a usb capture device from one computer to the other.

it has the option to use composite or svideo cables. so if your video card has
tv out by svideo then you can plug that in to the device and then the usb cable in to the other computer. and it comes with software also.
or you can use your own capture video software if you have any.

but it all depends on what size you want the little window and how you make it capture the video for the quailty of the image. usb 2 is worse then firewire and usb 3 is said to be better then firewire. B)

something else you can try, depending on the frequency of use, you could get a cheap travel personal dvd player, and very easily convert it to be used as a "preview" screen. That way you can carry a "monitor" around in your tool case, plus you get coolness points from your peers for having something they dont make. I built one a few months back to work on cctv systems. I dont see how one couldnt be reto-fitted to display a servers console output for you. IF you want some examples or help with a schematic, just lemme know.
