How hot does a AMD CPU have to be before it blows?

More than 90C, aparently.

I had shut off the switch that controls the side fans and CPU fan to vacuum them and I forgot to turn them back on, and my other 3 fans were off as well as I only turn them on when I leave the PC or go to bed.

Then my PC froze and I hit reset and got a CPU overheat error so I look down to see the fan not spinning (clear case FTW) and I'm like "oh crap" so I turn all fans up and once booted in windows, I check the temp.

Durring the time I wrote this post it went down to 44.

So in conclusion, an AMD64 processor will survive at 90 degrees. I'm guessing it was at like 95 when it froze (irony... lol)

This gave me a fun game idea, instead of a traditional LAN party, you have everyone build a super powerful machine, then see which runs longest without any fans. :o

seems to have stabalized at 37 now.

Stock heat sink too LOL With my custom hot glued fan setup. Suprised the glue did not melt.

:no no no:

Almost all of them have a die temp of 90c.

SO, if it still works--you lucked out-big time.

I remember reading some where that AMDs are notorious for dieing at the die temp.

Towards the bottom on this link are the temps

You should put in Motherboard monitor--FREE

It can give you an audio warning & you can even have it shutdown at a certain temp

It also puts little temp icons by your clock

Mine right now is 123f for the CPU & 84f board temperature.

If I just let it idle it drops to 116f.

Motherboard Monitor--CLICK

WOW--I just checked again after seeing you're running that 64

That has a die temp of 65c!

guess I got REALLY lucky then. LOL I actually have a monitor but I normally turn it off since it crashes a lot and it gets anoying. I have COP enabled, so my guess is thats what that freeze was. I'm just suprised it ran so stable at that temperature. No glitches or anything, it just froze at that point, but a second before it was running 100% stable.

What's COP?

Mine starts to run slow as it heats up.

Is this your AMD?

Cus if it is, I feel really weak with my XP 2000+

I use a XP 2000+ in my server. That chip is known to run hot. Mine runs at about 60-70 at full load (F@H). The one in my system is a AMD 64 3200+. I'm way behind, but don't have a reason to upgrade (unless I put it on the verge of catching on fire LOL)

don't you remember ? the show called the screensavers patrick was always toasting the amd cpus. he just did not plug the fan in and as soon as he turned on the computer the boot screen showed and went away he toasted it that fast.

them amd's need the fan on.

or set in the basement in canada in winter with the house window open.

how close is the heat sink to the powersupply fan / fans?

if it is really close to them then that is what saved your cpu.

you really and truly got luckier then crap that time red. :bsod:

funny thing is the two fans on the side of the case and the CPU fan are both on the same 5 volt circuit so they were all off. The only air flow in the case was the power supply fan, and think that is set to 5 volts too.... had the video card fan on but that just moves hot air around inside the case if theres no actual circulation.

The fan is rather close to the power supply so that did help too I think. :D

I'm pushing for 100 next time. Lets boil some water and make some eggs!

lol the fan fell on my video card today and made my screen go all wacky colors because of the motor's interference. Reput it with some twist ties and glue. I should probably just fork over the cash and order a new real one before I do any more damage. LOL

lets see, 50 bucks for a fan, or 400 bucks for a new cpu... I'll go with 50 lol.

I'm sure there is a setting in your BIOS that gives you the option to set a temperature where your computer will shut itself off at. Like say you set the max to 60C if you forgot to turn your fans on again, your computer would shutdown once it got to 60C instead of possibly toasting your processor.

Red you worry me with talk like that.

you really think some one looking for computer repair will see this message and come to you?

as for the 50 dollars what in the world kind of fan are you getting.
for that money it better be gold plated.

i bought an 6 inch case fan for ten dollars..

i had to cut a hole in the side of the case but i used mounting screws
not plastic wire ties to hold it in place sure on your system you can use them but saying you do online in your forum does not sound good for your repair work.

and to say a fan cost 50 dollars you sound like your going to get ripped off. the little square cpu fans only cost about 5 dollars here.

on the other hand if your also talking about buying a new cpu cooling fin that might cost 50 dollars.

but you did not say anything about the cooling fins

lol like I would use getho stuff like this on someone elses PC. :P I only did it as I can't afford to just turn off my production machine and wait a week or two for an order. Now it's quite solid though as there is a tie wrap too, I should have used that from the start. I did end up ordering a fan for 40ish bucks so when it comes in I'll install it.

The fan had fallen on top of the vid card but it was not a far fall, no damage done. the heat sink is really the most important part of the CPU cooling. If I was to max out the air flow in my case I could get away without a fan, thats just how cool that chip runs.

I have 9 fans in my PC & it's still at 123 F for the processor although it drops to 114 with no load.

Won't overclock at all. I've tried, was very unstable. Random freezes and reboots etc. I probably don't have the ram for it. I bought the cheapest I could find instead of the super high end stuff like corsair.

LOL. I just got the heatsink today. I remove my old one, afer prying the old fan off which was glued, and removing all the tie wraps (so it does not fall off again - since it did when I forgot to turn it back on (again) lol). Then I notice the instructions say to change the clip for AMD64 cpus, so I go to do that, and find out this thing is an engeneering nightmare, whoever designed it probably should not have.

First off, the clip is all solid metal, normally it's flexible, and the pressure is what makes it stay, this one is just a solid "V" with movable clips at the end, but theres no way to actually make it so it stays solidly. They also come off rather easily, which brings me to the second bad part...

I go to insert it where the smaller clip was... it DOES NOT FIT, and no forcing it in, it just totally does not fit there, impossible scientificly unless I fuse it in there by bringing the copper to it's liquification temperature.

Ok, fine, can't use this heat sink, but it has 2 nice fans on it and since I paid 60 bucks for it with shipping, I may as well make some use of it. So I remove the fans, the wireing was oddly done, ended up having to cut one off but I wanted the one with the sensor. So I found some steel wire downstairs and rigged it up and put it on my old heat sink again.

So I go to make a bad review on tigerdirect, but they removed the product. LOL. They did the right thing, thats all I can say...

So here I am, old heat sink, new fan rigged up ghetto style, and a totally useless $60 chunk of copper, but my cpu is still only at 45C. :P

Yo that sucks, you should've gotten an AC freezer 64 pro. Did you clean off the old thermal pad and reapply thermal grease, you are *supposed* to whenever you reseat or apply a new hsf.

Oh yeah for sure. The fan even came with new paste, so guess not all money is wasted. :P I used a knife to shave off the excess off the cpu and heat sink then used klenex and rubbing alcohol to clean it as much as I could. The new heat sink had a sticker left tons of glue/paper behind so I had fun scrubbing that off only to put back the old heat sink. :P

Good thing the AMD 64 CPU is all metal on top, makes it really easy to apply/remove paste. I remember when the circuitry used to be exposed and had to put it on the core without getting any on the registers.

But bottom line is, GHETTO MODDED STOCK HEAT SINK FTW!
