what makes it not work when i click on it.

it opens then i click on my hotmail accounts inbox link.

then the alert saying outlook express can't find the server pops up
and i have to close outlook express.

then i restart out look express and click on my hotmail account inbox
and it picks up the email?

this is getting old fast does anyone know what is causing it?

 :banghead:

Yes microsoft Did stop the new hotmail members from using outlook express to pick up hotmail.

but that was after jan ? 2006

any one that had an account older then that was still able to use hotmail and outlook express.

the trouble is it makes me restart outlook express all the time, before it picks up the email in the hotmail accounts..

not sure why it started that?

ya, Triple our I here could give you one or you can switch to Mozilla Thunder Bird. It's nice (although it keeps crashing on my comp every so often. I think it has to do with my hardware though.) pretty easy to set up too.

I've been having the same problem for about a week

If you just close out the error box & click send & receive it should go--without closing OE

At least mine does

It only happens the first time I launch OE

:D

thanks richardj.

that works on mine also.

sure beats restarting the program :awesome:

:banghead:
but still does not beat it working right in the first place. :(

thanks to you triple and syb but i don't want a gmail account
or any other account. it reminds me of having lots of post office
boxes where you need to go out of your house and get them in
different locations.

one account i can get with my email client without going on line
is like picking up the mail out of the porch mail box.

and i am lazy :stir the pot:

Roving--you can set up Gmail with Outlook Express & it works great..

I can also get you a Gmail account if you need it.

However, I notice now that some of my other accounts are also timing out with OE

I just had to do ANOTHER repair/reinstall ( yes, fans-that makes 5 in ONE WEEK) and I downloaded a bunch of MS hotfixes.

I'm beginning to think that a OE 'security upgrade' is causing this.
:banghead:
I haven't had time to Google it.

I think we should start a pool on your repair/reinstall. Something along the lines of those who guess right how many installs you do weekly and if nobody wins then the money can go to iceteks.

Anyway back to subject at hand. You can set up hotmail and Gmail with ThunderBird, I am not sure about OE because I tend to use the least amount of Microsoft products possible unless they are better then the free programs out there.

Have you installed IE 7?

If so, there is an update for it, but it's for Genuine Windows, only.

You can try this fix:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

The link for the hot fix is : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=904942

If you download the hot fix--please save it & send it to me as I have a "Genuine Windows" situation.

ROVING----

I gave up & decided to install Windows Live Mail Desktop.

It's working great!

You can also use this with Messenger.

It also has built in spam/phishing options.

I can now block senders or sender domains, as I keep getting spam from different senders, but same domain

It's like an improved Outlook Express

The only thing is that there is a HUGE ad bar on the right side, but I downloaded a patch program to get rid of it.

Patch : http://apatch.org/files/index.php?ACT=dl&id=17

Patch home page: http://apatch.org/downloads.php

Win Live Mail: http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?ver...0e-4911fb2b2e6d

FREE

finally gave in to the ms machine did you?

i suspect that they might have caused the error on purpose to make us
go to the new email system?

but i am not going i'll put up with the error until i find the fix or get fed up
and reinstall outlook express..

they'll drag be kicking and screaming in to a new system. as i am not going to pave their sticking driveways anymore.

they give out money to charaiteys all the time to look good.
but they don't say they make us go in to debut and join the charties just to get
our money back.

i think they need to give me back all the money we spent on their systems and replace them with the new one..

lets see with the discounted price from buying on the tv channels at closeout that means 1100.00 dollars for this xp and all the software?

YEAH BUT--

Like I said--it's free & it's cool & it's fast & it works good. :P

AND I don't thing reinstalling will help--I've done it twice with no results.

Download that hotfix-that I told about 2 posts ago & see if it works. It is to address the problem of IE 7 not working with Outlook Express.

I might have the same problem, as iI started to install IE7 & then canceled.

That's why I want you to send me the hotfix if you get it, please. ;)

i have found that several other programs are doing the same thing?

only they don't post the error message.

what they do is pop up the dial up connection panel asking me to connect
when i am already online if i click cancel or work offline it then kills the connect?

atleast outlook don't kill the connection,

yes it is looking like the same thing as out look has to connect to the email server.

the other program doing this every time is the ftp program and it has to conect to the ftp server.

ie is one of the others that do this every now and then but not much.
the same as the avg update program it only does it some times.

so the common connection is just that each one has to connect to servers online.
so something is messing with the connection program for every program that uses it.

nice try but no go. it might have fixed the ftp program and others but it did not fix the outlook express problem?

i will have to wait to see if the others are fixed but if the trouble is the same as the outlook express then they are not fixed.

Tip: If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) there is a command that can be used instead of Winsockxpfix. It works by resetting the winsock catalogue. Click Start, then Run and type CMD in the dialogue box that appears, and then click OK. Type netsh winsock reset into the DOS window that appears.
that is what i did.

and it did not work. :banghead:

Yes

but

If you look at the other post, I had a link for the LSP Fix

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

This is a little program that you run and it resets everything

The CMD you used only works on XP/NT

NOT Win 98

OR if you are using XP on that same link is Winsockxpfix

which IS for XP and does the same thing.

It's used for instance, when you are connected & you can't connect with a browser.

It can't harm anything to use it to see.

REBOOT after you use it. :dosgonebad:

just a simple little thing thats all just so simple

it appears that i might have fixed it.

well it seems to have stopped this now.
i just tried it again and it did not toss the error up at me.?

remember that old lesson taught in school of duck and cover?

i think i'll duck and run for cover now.

simple so simple

okay i am not going to say whom but some one was messing in the firewall options and set the application layer gateway to ASK for permison to connect.

well it was a learning experince now wasn't it?
how did i find this out?
the new program that was just installed said it was not seeing a connection because of a firewall. so i started looking for it and it was not even listed in the firewall so the only thing it could have been was the app' layer gateway and that was closed.
okay so now this is me exiting stage right
