ok i went to open a video today and it was really slow loading

so i thought well wtf ive never done ad-aware or virus scan on this pc ... ever since it was bought

alot of my programs are umm how should i say hmm
cracked hacked borrowed or basicly made in someones basement

so i thought well ok will do the scans today

ad-aware came up with only 15 cookies from IE so that was great
only use IE when a site wont work correctly with mozilla

virus scan came up clean but thats where i thought i would be hit

anyways i moved on to defrag since i found no other reason for the computer to be a lil slow

well 27% of the drive was fragmented ..228GB total space on C and 115GB free space
so basicly i wanna know if leaving it fragmented for long like that is a bad thing?
also one single file could not be defraged and it did not give me the name of the file

can any harm come from this othere then being slow?

Hmm fragmentation may make it slow, but its not the end of the world to never defrag, it makes a difference but not big enough. I would check to see how much stuff is running in the background, like for example some video cards like to run some kind of agent in the task bar. Lot of this stuff can be removed to save resources.

Well of course the first thing to try is rebooting the box. Memory leaks are no unheard of and a quick reboot usually cleans things up. Other than that you probably want to bring up good old taskman (right click the task bar and click Task Manager). Check out the performance tab to see what your CPU and Memory usage looks like. If it's unusually high, check out the processes tab. You can sort by CPU or Mem Usage to look for a likely culprit process. Don't go clickign End Process to quickly though. Not unless you are absolutely sure what it is. Some of that stuff is system critical. You can always do a quick google search on the process name or post the big offenders here.

Your CPU should also be idling at 99% free or near if you're not doing anything. If you run F@H or other such program, just look at that program's usage as if it was unused cpu, so it should be at 99% usage for that program.

Even on XP. This is XP with classic windows theme not fisher price, though. But if you have any process using up like 10% cpu and you are not doing anything, look into it. Could be legit (background virus scan) but could be spyware that's undetected.

27% is ALOT of fragmentation, in my humble opinion

That means that almost 1/3 of your disc is fragged.

I've installed Diskeeper Pro Premier & it will defrag automatically.( email me for "special" info about this if u want it)<_>

It's gotten rid of almost 12,000 fragments in a couple of days & I know my pc is running faster.

A fragmented disk is kind of like looking for a file on your desk when all the papers from the files are scattered & mixed in with all the other stuff on your desk.

well this is basicly what starts with the computer -1 program i always close when i start it

the defrag did fix my slow video problem tho

anyways the pc does idle at around 97-99 free

im not sure what this ones for tho ... like i dont use WiFi at all that i know of?

the computer seems to be in great shape considering that i have not lifted a fingle to help keep it that way lol

but i was just wondering why it would be a high precentage like that of fragmented files

see the only noticed slowness in the computer were video files so im amuming it was those files that were fragmented other then that its bin fine lol

was just basicly wondering if any harm to the drive or files could come from being lazy is all

No- fragmentation won't 'harm' the drive

It'll just keep slowing down

You really should use & schedule that script I posted-it works great & you can run it everyday & not worry about it.

You should shut all the below off;

That location finder is for you to find out where you are using WIFI

and, as you're lost anyway, might as well shut it off.

Well, you can use it but not have it load--unless you always have it open while you're on the pc
