Okay I recently come across this error. I looked it up on the Internet to find stuff out about it and after a little bit of searching I found that there wasn't much information out there about it and how to fix it. So I decide for the benefit of everyone to right about it and how to fix it.

What it is:

Basically from what I gather when you try to install something that uses Microsoft installer program (msi) it uses registry keys to determine the locations of certain folders that are required to install the program. Now for some reason weather you changed it using Windows Disk Administrator program or something else has your registry keys point to a drive letter (example: C:) that is not valid. So for example your hard rive is labeled C: but the windows registry thinks and points to a E: drive. So your registry keys refer to nonexistent folders and Setup fails.

How to fix: There are two ways 1: Change your registry keys back so that they point to the correct drive. 2: Change your drive letter to what the registry is pointing at. I will only explain the latter one because it is the simplest way to fix it.

To correct this problem, use the Windows Disk Administrator program to restore the drive letter of the hard disk to value in the error message:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and click Disk Administrator Or go into Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools and click Disk Administrator
2. Right-click the drive whose letter you want to change. On the shortcut menu, click Assign Drive Letter. (this will be on the bottom half of the screen right if not in the top)
3. Select the correct drive letter from the list and click OK.
If you are prompted to quit the Disk Administrator or to restart your computer, do so. Once the computer has restarted, attempt to install Office again.

That should solve the problem question, comments or corrections are welcomed

I've been suffering from the same error and also struggling to find decent stuff on it. I've had a go at following your instructions but because the drive it should be pointing too is my boot drive, it's not allowing me to change letter. Would you (or anybody else) be able to run through how to change the registry keys back?

Cheers

Physically unhook your other drives & run a repair reinstall from boot from your XP cd.

With only one drive hooked up, it will label it as C: :awesome:

Well I hope that worked, and I hoped en2arp assumed that when you said "Physically unhook your other drives" that you meant everyone except your cd-rom drive and HD
