Been working all summer, figured I'd spend some of the cash on some toys. I just ordered myself 2 19" Acer LCD displays (always wanted to go duel) and a promissing D-link router, since my curent router is starting to be flaky, it locks up a few times a month, and due for replacement, and this router actually has logging, so I can know what's going on my network. The total came to about 700 bucks so thats not too bad at all. Cant wait till it comes in. :D

My mom will probably freak at me, but that's only the aftermath, since its already ordered now anyway. :P

Hehe yep will do. Can't wait to hook up and configure this router too, it even has QoS, SPI, and other fun features, and the built in switch is gigabit.

New toys...always a good thing. My new one is an Oreck vacuum. Oh... almost forgot the new Kodak I got a while back. Not real happy with it though, should have waited and got a Sony.

I’ve always wanted an LCD monitor, but i can’t justify buying one when my CRT works just fine. I’ll be sure to get one for my next computer though.

I bought some new toys too! I needed more hard-drive space, so i bought an 80-GB (not GiB) hard drive. Oh, and my CD-RW burner finally died after a few weeks of trouble, so i bought a 16x DVD±RW burner to replace it.

An LCD would be nice and they are coming down in price also. My CRT works great too and there's a spare one here if needed. I may never get an LCD.

A 40 GB hard drive is enough for my needs since I don't store music or videos. Smaller hard drives are not the norm now.

I did finally get a printer too, got lucky and found a two year old model that had only been used for display. I made sure I could get generic ink before buying it though. The photo I printed looked as good as those from the photo printing stores.

I archive all my CDs to FLAC, so i need a lot of space! :P (Well, i guess 80 GB doesn’t qualify as “a lot” these days.)

The printer sounds like a good find! What model is it? I have an Epson Stylus CX3200 printer/scanner/copier. It’s never given me major problems, but i’m not very happy with it. (Why disable black-and-white printing when only my colour cartridge is out?!) My next printer will definitely be a laser printer.

Wow you should see my server. :D

Code: Select all

[root@borg ~]# df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2             9.5G  6.7G  2.4G  74% /
/dev/hda1             145M  8.9M  128M   7% /boot
/dev/hdb1             276G  160G  102G  62% /data
/dev/hda5             100G  4.5G   90G   5% /data2
tmpfs                1014M     0 1014M   0% /dev/shm
/dev/hdc1             294G  112G  168G  40% /data3
[root@borg ~]#
[code]

data3 is recent, and I had no idea they made 500GB drives, and that they were affordable, or I would of got one instead. :P I'd get more drives but I'd almost need a specially designed enclosure to keep them all in, most cases dont hold more then 4 drives without having to put them close appart. And using IDE limits me to 4 drives anyway though I could stick a sata card in there.

Printer was a great find! There was a seller on ebay that had 10...they all sold too. I shopped around for days and was about ready to give up. Most printers are all in one now or for photo printing. I have a scanner and the fax feature was not needed, so I really had to do some searching. Canon PIXMA ip6000D was what I got. Canon's technology seems to be above the rest. IMO.

Never found a good price for a laser or the ink they use.

Red, I can't comment on the server...it's all Greek to me!

I pretty much decided to stick with lazerjet for printing. The problem with bubble jet printers now is they eat up ink faster then a squirrel would go through a 5 pound bag of peanuts. Specially lexmarks.

My dad came to pick me up at work today and said I had a package but they missed it so I could only get it tuesday, but we decided to track down the purolator truck so we can get it, and sure enough we did, and I'm typing this on my new 19" LCD, and I got my dual monitor setup which freaken rocks. I tested it in UO and I my plan is exactly what I wanted: the map on one screen the game on the other, the game itself only supports up to 800*600 unfortunately, but this gives me tons of "workspace" area to put HP bars and what not, heck, I can probably fill the empty space with like 50 hp bars if I wanted to... could write a script to grab all hp bars of anyone around without worrying about running out of space on the screen.

Then as I was setting up the cabling and such, another delivery truck pulled in our driveway, and I got my router too! I'm so excited, and I did not even get to plugging in the router yet. :P Will be a cable nightmare, but once its plugged in and my other router put into switch mode, it will rule. I'll be extra sure to put myself on a gigabit port, and my parents on the 100 :P Yeah, I'm evil.

I'll post pics later, I'm just admiring this new display and opening up all sorts of programs to see how they look. If you never spent 600 bucks on a display setup, do it now. It's worth it. :D

Yep for sure, and its awesome that I got the router too, first I was expecting only the router, since I got a confirmation email for that only. Then I got the 2 LCDs but no router, and as I'm setting up the LCDs the ups truck backs into the drive way.

Went for a bbq so when I came back I configured the router, and now I just finished putting it into production as I only had it under my desk to configure it. I'm using the old router as a switch since I need extra ports.

Want to hear something weird? I go to use the uplink port on the old router/switch to uplink to one of the ports of the new router, but I would not get a link. So for kicks I tried using a regular port of the old switch, and it works. I had to tripple check to make sure the cable did not just happen to be a cross over, and it was not. Have no idea why that worked, but as long as it does, its what counts. :P
