ok problem one
i got a usb hub here made by micro inovations
usb214n ><
the driver for it is supposed to be preinstalled in windows xp and it does work on this system with win xp but i dont need it on this system
its for the laptop thats also running xp but it does not work on the laptop cuz the drivers not working or missing?
i searched google and a bunch of driver sites for the one i need but came up empty handed
so what are my options?
can i take the driver(s) off this system and put them on the laptop?
if so how/where do i find em?
any other ideas?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
problem 2
i also have like 7 gb's of video here thats in .mkv and .ogm that i would like as avi
i did find a program to convert them to avi but the problem is thay lose subtitles so how do i get the subtitle file out of the mkv file or convert with subtitles on?
if easyer whats the best way to get these formats to play as is without installing 50 freaken programs/codecs that open a bunch of extra un needed crap
tho i would still prefer converting them to avi
any help with these 2 problems would be kewl but usb hub help is needed more
First time I hear of a hub needing drivers... have you tried plugging it in anyway and plugging a device into it? The PC should pickup the device plugged in the hub. If it really does depend on drivers, only way is to try an find them and that can be a PIA. Try driverguide.com maybe.
For the video, I never heard of that format, but I'm guessing its a format that can hold subtitles, and AVI can't, as far as I know, so with AVI you wont have the subtitles, but just a video.
ok for the hub the problem is it does not work properly on the laptop for some reason like it has power so devices that only need power work like the cooling pad
but other things such as mouse and keypad dont work ... thay light up but dont work
but it works fine down here on this pc? like you said just plug in and it picks up
when ya plug it in the laptop it says its installed but the device may not be working properly
i ran a program called driver detective on the pc and 3 came up
General Purpose USB Hub
USB Root Hub
Generic USB Hub
would any of these be for the hub?
i donno much about drivers other then thay are a pain and one is needed lol
~~~~~~~~~~~~
video tho im ok on my own most of the time but thought i would post to find an easyer way to get what i need lol
and yes those formats do support subtitles and multiple languages
see when converting the video i can choose the language i want to use so my avi comes out as compressed video/uncompressed audio but theres no option to turn subtitles on also when converting to merge them into the image ><
my player supports sub's tho in some file formatts like .txt etc so what i need is away to pull the sub file out of the mkv in a readable format for my player or like i said i need a way to play them without having to install 100 things lol
i did get them to play with very lil installed but the sound falls out place after 2 or so mins and if i install more to get them to play right then i get a bunch of errors in other formats i use daily like avi and mpg on top of a few things opening in the task bar every time i start a player
basicly right now i have enuff to open and convert the files to avi but not enuff to watch em as is

Hmmm sounds like a power issue. The laptop USB interface is not supplying enough power to the hub/devices. Only way around that is to plug a power adapter in the hub, if you have one. Just make sure the adapter voltage is what the hub is rated for...
And the message about not working properly, is it because it's a usb 1 hub? xp nags out saying it can perform faster if you put a usb1 device in the usb port.
Hmm now that I think of it, I think keyboard and mice only work in certain ports, and most likely not on a hub, I've never actaully tried putting a keyboard and mouse on a hub, but I noticed on some PCs if I boot up they wont work, if I switch ports, they do work.

If you go into the system-device manager & click on that hub to get properties-you'll see a power tab.
It will tell you what's available & what your plugged in whatever is using.
Try that.

I would think there's more to the file, but worth trying that. Easiest way would be to find the actual driver though. Speciall if this is a different version of windows.

I don't understand why--if you have XP on both PCs --they should have the same generic drivers.
ALSO--where you found those power settings in the device manager by the drivers there is a button to upgrade the driver. It should automatically look through the pc & also go online to look for better drivers.
I even looked on the Micro site & your model isn't even listed-no drivers-no manual.
You could download 'driver detective' it's free to run but you have to register to get the drivers.

OR how about this?

Yeah but you said the mouse wasn't working
The last link was for a USB site--not Windows update
If you only have XP service pack 1--it is lacking USB 2.0 driver support.
If this files missing you can do a dirty install of XP
or do that SFC routine.
