PC Mag’s verdict:
“If you can remember the name of OpenOffice.org, you can remember where to download it for no charge. If you tried the previous 1.1.4 version, the 2.0 beta version currently available will be a pleasant surprise. Unlike the slow, ugly, and underpowered earlier version, 2.0 is swift, smooth, and highly compatible with Office documents. Even better, it has plenty of features that you can’t find in MS Office itself.

Word Viewer 2003 lets you open Word 2003 documents and documents created with all previous versions of Microsoft Word for Windows® and Microsoft Word for Macintosh. In addition to Word document files (.doc), you can also open files saved in the following formats:

* Rich Text Format (.rtf)

* Text (.txt)

* Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml)

* WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd)

* WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd)

* Works 6.0 (.wps)

* Works 7.0 (.wps)

* XML (.xml)

With Word Viewer 2003, you can view, print, and copy document contents to another program. However, you cannot edit an open document, save a document, or create a new document. This download is a replacement for Word 97 Viewer and all previous Word Viewer versions.

OpenOffice.org doesn’t work with Works files. You could try the viewer Richardj linked to if you run Windows, but remember that you can’t edit documents with it. If someone sent you the file, maybe you can have the sender convert it.

*Resists ranting on proprietary formats*
