XP tip: File shares wont work

If you are trying to access the c$ sign share on an XP machine and it just gives you access denied, or no permission, or anything having to do with failed access, its a simple checkmark.
Open any folder, such as "my computer" and click tools, then folder options. Select the view tab and go right to the bottom where it says "use simple file sharing (recommended)" and uncheck it.
WARNING: I am assuming your PC is on an internal network and not directly attached to the internet. A windows machine should never be directly connected to the internet, in fact, that goes with any OS, but windows especially.
Simple file sharing should also be unchecked on machines that need to have software deployed to remotely, such as a antivirus, firewall, etc.
