It's very picky, if you notice the RSS feed on my home page, the script used for that has about 50 if statements to cancel out certain characters, such as quotes. Otherwise it does not validate. "" like that are ok, but when using a word processor there's like 5 different types that are seen in emails, so I need to make sure they turn into the proper ones.

Yes, if there is at least one error in your code, most software will just stop parsing your XML and give you a lovely error.

I think that's very good though. It makes you write better XML, and I would hate for people to be able to get away with what they can in HTML.

Plain XML isn't very fun. It's sort of like coding in HTML, but everything is more strict and you make up your own tags. The things that stem from XML are much more entertaining, but you should learn the basics first I think...
