1. All of my letters from my mother were destroyed. (my mom lived in a different state)

2. I was to be grounded from May 6 to June 17 (I even recall the exact dates -- this event has stuck that vividly in my memory), during which, for the first half of said period, I would be required to eat seperate from the family.

3. My Sonic the Hedgehog comic book collection (which, at that point, I had been working on for five years), or at that part of it which resided there in Kentucky and not in Texas with my mom, was destroyed.

4. I was to be grounded from video games until my 18th birthday (a tenet that my parents eventually decided against enforcing beyong the end of the summer).

5. Most of my clothes and bedding were taken away. My selection of precisely seven towels and washrags (one set for each day of the week) to use was also rationed and predetermined.

6. For the duration of the grounding, when at church with my parents, immediately following services, I was to go to and sit inside the car for the hour or so that we traditionally spent hanging out with friends, without stopping to talk to anyone.

7. I would be put to a rigorous work schedule to occupy my time during all hours of the day that I was not directly involved in school work. The first major chore (which I didn't manage to finish before the end of the grounding) was to pull up each and every week manually from our two-acre front and back yards. On non-school days, I was to get up at 6 AM and to be outside pulling weeds by 6:30, having made the bed, showered, eaten, cleaned the dishes, and started any laundry going that I had need of cleaning. I was outside so much that I my skin had started peeling from the sun burns I had received (despite wearing sun lotion) by the time the grounding was over. On the rare instances that it rained too heavily outside to perform this duty, menial work, of course, was always available to do inside. My daily labors would end at 8:15 to 8:30 PM on school nights and 8:45 to 9:00 PM on other days.

8. For psychological effect, all posters and pictures were removed from my room in the basement.

9. Restroom breaks from my work schedule were timed.

10. I would also be required to memorize and recite a series of Bible verses dealing with the condemnation of liars and how God views liars as abominations. Specifically, I would be obligated to participate in what would otherwise be a voluntary youth Bible program for Lads to Leaders in my church in which you memorize and recite 10 sets of 10 verses each. My parents selected those verses dealing with lying and liars for me to memorize. Normally, the person doing the memorizing selects the verses for themselves in this program. The idea here, of course, was to convince me that if I didn't stop my "habitual lying" I would go to hell.

11. I was required not to tell my mom or anyone at school or church about the grounding I had received. (eventually, when I visited my mom for summer visitation, I decided against this)

12. If I violated any tenet of the grounding, I would then be required to wear a giant sign stating my 'crime' and walk up and down the streets of my neighborhood all day yelling what I had done wrong for all to hear, quote "like they do to prisoners."
