It weeds out those who are not big enough to put aside something as trivial as a flag for an idea that is bigger than any material object. If I understand what you are asking, simply that the idea of doing something good or right is more important than something material such as a design (flag, coat of arms, etc. Simply asking what's more important, your image or what you do?)

All the silly things like exploding planets and ninja monkeys are just part of a forum game, but sometimes in the course of playing a game, you get to make a point or two about some things that ARE really important. As far as the French are concerned, the main thing I think about when I think of the French is that the Americans most likely would not have won the Revolutionary War if it had not been for our ally France.
