I thought many times of pulling the plug, but there is a few reasons I would not.
1: DNS and email is setup on this server, don't feel like migrating it back to shared hosting.
2: This domain expires in 2017, may as well keep using it.
3: Once we do the planned revamps hopefully population will grow and stay.
Problem is everything is too easy and all over the place here so we need a major revamp. People get bored too fast.
4: When I start my web host, I'll already have a server to start off on.

The plan is to keep all chars/houses/accounts but just change/delete lot of stuff. So like all AoAs might get deleted, or changed. Lot of artifacts would also get deleted just so it starts off a clean slate. Stuff like skills would remain though. But this is not written in rock yet.

Basically the shard is due to be rewritten using a common theme/style so it's not a mashup of everything. There are also several systems which are being revised that will allow development to be a lot more flexible (Largest prospect is being database driven where all elements can be controlled by the developers).
We will be making a plan of all the proposed changes to see if they are worth going through with or if it would take too much time to complete/pull off.

houses would stay.
We'd try to keep as much stuff as possible but anything we really think should be removed/changed, would. But at same time we'd probably release the rest of ML to try and make up for it. The shard will also be running on Linux and using a MySQL backend by then, so that means no more world saves.
Most likely any OSI items will stay. So if you have a suit made entirely of OSI items you have nothing to worry about.

well this will only happen in like a year from now, if it even happens at all. We may just branch off as a seperate shard too. Have aov custom and aov OSI. It's not fully planned yet, we just know something has to be done to make the shard more stable population wise.

That's the problem, people don't play because there's no one on. So that means there will never be no one on. It's like saying 0 equals 0 as long as 0 equals 0. It will always equal 0. The shard is doomed.
Anyone want to rent a quad xeon server?

As red mentioned, OSI items are not going to be removed so you could collect standard OSI items. You would also keep your houses as well as all items that are not listed to be removed.
As for AOAs and other custom items, not everything will go. Some we may decide to keep, provided it fits in with Ultima lore. I suggested a replacement system if we decide to go the SQL route as I agree, it's not entirely fair to veterans who have collected a lot in the past. Basically the items that are to be removed will be replaced with points that are given to the owners. These points can then be traded in for items such as runic tools, OSI standard items, recipes etc. So if you were a veteran, you would keep items that were confirmed to stay and get reclaimable points for items that got the axe. Thinking something similar along the lines of OSI's spring cleanup program or collection rewards.

1. I'm a full time student
2. I have a job
3. I have a g/f that I live with
4. I have an xbox360 and a wii
5. I have a pc that can handle much more than is currently on the market, game wise.
6. My parents just split, and my father has become a full-blown alchy.
7. I'm going to be laid off in January, due to a shitty economy
8. I'm sick of logging on to the server and seeing ppl bitching at each other, or no one online.
9. I'm sick of playing MMORPG's alone... UO isn't that great as a solo game.
10. I need to save energy for Diablo 3.

fuck D3, SC2 is what it's all about.
well, I'm going to still be playing both of them, so you know where to contact me =]. I already have 4 friends and myself planning out playing D3 based on the information already out. SC2 should be great though, however, hard to beat the origional.

Your dad just needs a drinking buddy to get over the tough times, and a reminder to stay on track and focused with his Future...
as for the state of this shard, couldent agree with you more, i might forward yall to ParagonDancers Image listed in his Demise Forum (the one that says arguing over the internet is like being in the special olympics, even if you win, your still retarded)
i must also agree that SC2 is going to be where its at, till WarCraft4 is released (or maybe even a 3rd expantion to War3)

Before UO came out i was playing War2/Diablo 1...
i played diablo 1 SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH that after 10 minuits of diablo 2 i couldent stand it anymore, it was the same engine as 1 and practicly 100% the same with just new classes/maps...
the skill tree was nice, and kind of decent, and it was actualy anti-hack (courtesy of raymond, who created the first diablo 1 trainer lewl, way to get a job working at blizzard by them giving up trying to fix your scripts)

So I just finished reading through the last few pages, dealing with a shard revamp. I saw the post the first day I started playing so I've known something like this was coming.
So what's the deal so far? Any new updates on the direction we'll be going? I haven't played on too many other shards other than OSI so I'm not sure exactly what the population averages are on RunUO shards. Yea there's not 10,000 people online ... that's expected. I know UO is the best game to ever come out but do THAT many people still play? I read about the shard branch off idea and that doesn't seem too bad but meh, I'd feel bad for the 'true vets' that have been at this for a bit. Then again, it's all about the people that are playing.
Anyways, what's up? lol

Planning's being done so far and we're setting up everything that will be required. Red is setting up a new private branch that we will be working on (This branch is not available for players to access but may be opened up for beta testers as development progresses).
Actual changes will begin in the new year sometime after the holidays. Red will mostly be working on the large development changes while I will be researching how stuff is intended to work and making appropriate changes to the code.
Once development actually begins, we will keep players posted on how development is going.
As it goes right now, the shard revamp will be about 90% OSI and 10% custom. Customs are limited to stuff that is either "cool" or "helpful" but nothing that will drastically alter gameplay or overshadow something OSI has put in the game (For example, no super uber massive artifact that would make ornament of the magician look like a looted 1/3 bracelet).
The main changes are backend that players won't see but they will improve server performance as well as item tracking and providing admins with other statistical information. Red can tell you more about the details of the backend changes.
OSI has also been making tons of additions to the game that we have been falling behind on so we need to code where the priorities lie (New stuff like getting the new stackables coded, new veteran rewards in, adding the new "special" seeds and faction additions to name a few things).
As for veterans, no, they aren't at a loss. They have accumulated items throughout their time and I'm sure they easily have enough to make several suits on the revamped server from the moment they hop on. Anything else they've collected that is to be removed is planned to be reimbursed according to rarity (Luckily, rarity is a value we can easily track). We're still planning on what's suitable reimbursement for goods. Anything that's OSI standard will remain on the new server (OSI artifacts, OSI items, player houses, veteran rewards, etc etc). Most customs will be re-evaluated as to their effect on the shard.

Good stuff. Dear god, burn Luna to the ground though lol I know that doesn't go with OSI but blaaaah Luna! There should be a 'player city', like a central hub, that isn't Luna. Maybe something we can donate to, the more we do, the more amenities are in the city, banker/vendors/lampposts/shoppes/etc.
So will the CTF and other events that are so freakin awesome (when people join) still be in? I hope so.

Oh yes the events will stay. In fact there will be new additions (like perhaps stats boards) and new type of events that fall in same system. I want to have a big variety of auto events so we'll always be adding more,

The automated events don't alter gameplay and are mostly for fun so those are customs that are going to be staying for certain.
I'm also aware of the housing limits of luna. Depending on how far we want to go with OSI, we could always move the houses to the outskirts of the walls where the housing region is meant to begin. I don't see any reasons why they need to be moved at this point in time however as they are very good spots for vendors.
