You forget, the Heart of Gold runs on the Infinite Improbability Drive. As the drive ramps up to infinite improbability, the less likely something is, the more likely it is to happen - like suddenly appearing on the other side of the galaxy exactly where you wanted to be without all that mucking about in hyperspace, or a never-fail shield generator suddenly failing for no reason and a very confused whale falling on top of you.

(Someone obviously hasn't read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

I haven't read it nor will i read it, but i saw the movie.
And the probability of my "never-fail shield generator" failing is 0%, therefore there is a 100% chance of it not failing. So if you decrease the chance of it failing, going into negatives, the chance of it not failing begins to exceed 100%, therefore it works more efficently with every "ramp up" of said drive. And if you decrease the chance of failure and the chance of not failure at the same time, the chance of failure and the chance of not failure are proportional as before. Such as if the chance of failure is decreased by 99%, then the chance of failure is -99%. And if the chance of not failure is decreased by the same amount, the chance of not failure is 1%, therefore it cannot fail but is very likely to fail at the same time, but the chance of failure is -100% greater still, so it will not fail.

I never said your shield generator failed, I said it turned into a piece of dry toast, meaning the atoms of the generator spontaneously re-configured themselves. Also as this was spontaneous, and not generated by an outside force, it cannot be protected against. A theoretical anti-spontaneous atom reconfiguration mechanism would have been reconfigured along with the rest of the device.

Aha! But you said it didn't fail. It was merely turned into a piece of toast. Therefore it still works, though is a piece of toast. Nothing can still hurt it or me, or try to eat it...>.<
And, i also stated that nothing can harm my device. This includes itself. So it's own atoms are protected from failure. So at every instance of time it makes sure it's own atoms are not-reconfigured and stops any re-configuration that may be occuring.
Basically, it works like Vista, except without "OMFGWTFFAILUREMODE" xD
Also, turning the device off would be considered harm to me because the universe is not there, so a vaccum is everything except me and my device. My device provides and un-interruptable flow of oxygen to my lungs to keep me alive, so stopping said device from working in any sense is causing me harm, therefore it cannot be stopped.
