Due process is a bitch. Unfortunately it's the law. Not only are the court system often times very backed up, they've also found that dragging trials out as well as prolonging the trial, conviction, and formal sentancing dates greatly decrease the amount of errors that could possibly occur on the side of the prosecution during these stages, thus greatly decreasing the chance that the conviction will be later over-turned on an appeal based on some technicality or procedural mistake. Generally speaking, prosecutors are given one chance and one chance only to convict someone of a certain crime. If they screw it up in the slightest way, the criminal walks. In America the tables are dramatically tilted in favor of the accused in almost every case.
