Pretty much what Chris and Red said. If gas prices get higher and higher, people will stop buying huge SUV's that they don't need. This will force auto companies to make smaller more fuel efficient cars and help get the US off of oil. Well, smokes don't cost a lot really. If they did go up by a lot, in the long run fewer people would start, because they don't want to pay for them (this requires that these people know they are addictive and will kill you). Beyond that, cleaner technologies and renewable feul sources just aren't cost effective if gas is cheap. The reason we are so tied to things like oil, coal, and natural gas is because they are so much cheaper than the alternatives. This is because we don't already have an infrastructure built for them (like we do for oil), we need more investment in R&D, and we need a mass market to drive the price down which isn't there because oil's cheaper.Reaper wrote:Pretty much what Chris and Red said. Cities would probably resort to increased public transportation, like Chris says. Thats not a bad thing at all.

Smokes do seem to cost a lot. In comparison to what they used to be but I guess you can say that about everything. It seemed (here anyway) that they went from $5.00 to $10.00 a pack over night. I don't smoke but I just remember all the smokers I hung out with complaining about the price of cigarettes all of a sudden at one time. I think the cost must have made some leaps at that time.

Taxes on tobacco vary greatly in different countries, even states, which is why there are so many cigarette outlets to go with the titty bars and fireworks stores just inside the South Carolina border.
Then it would be illegal. Mind you if you bought a few cartons and sold the packs to your friends across the border, no biggie. You make a nice little profit per pack, but no real surge in income, and it's not big enough for the police to worry about. But get much bigger and it's selling a controlled substance without a license (depending on the statecountry), and two different types of tax evasion (one of the tobacco, one for the income).Chyse wrote:Why wouldn't I be making any money?
