This is practically a rhetorical question but I am curious what your thoughts are on this matter...
I am posting a select few full length radio shows on the new revamped site - Brave New World from 1956 being my first one - and am choosing between MP4 or Ogg-Vorbis. The MP4 files are uploaded as of this morning but now I am leaning more toward Ogg-Vorbis.

When you say mp4, what codec are you using?

I am still using compaact! with the VBR settings which is no longer developed but works fine for me.
here is a screencap which probably is a better answer for your question

LOL thats hilarious.

Now we're at a point where computers don't have 64K nor MB of memory but 64GB of memory (some servers can go this high). Crazy how times have changed eh.

Can't even load the windows vista boot loader in 64K of memory now LOL.

The only thing I know about media formats is the big stink they’re making in the Linux world right now; I know astonishingly little about their technical merits.

I thought the Brave New World recordings were very clear and surprisingly small though.
I love that bottom picture of him trying to look suave in the suit.

I have been an audiophile for some years now and have used or played with most of the codecs out there, including dinosaurs like VQF just to have a look.
I chose Ogg-Vorbis now for several reasons:
> Musepack is not optimised for lower bitrates, and development is stalled or worse
> Wvpack proved less than ideal for low bitrates with small sizes
> MP3 is ineffecient with poorer sound quality at lower bitrates - I have hundreds of OTR shows in the 32 kbps range that show this.
> The setting I used for the encoder is ideal for these 50-60 year old mono recordings and maintains high audio quality with a very decent size range
<end babbling>

I most certainly have but have not had cause to use it yet as it is intended mainly for speech, and not for audio with music or other things which is easily 99% of my collection.
It is an very good choice for speech though.

EDIT: I realised that have training records for receptionists/office assistants from 1965 that are nothing but dry speech that would be an excellent test for speex.

Do you still use FLAC for those?

finally home after a 12+ hour day...so much fun

short answer: I was until just recently

<long answer>
Working backwards from newest to oldest files and the codecs used:
- My current and likely long-term choice now that I finally have decent storage space available is Wavpack. The preferred method for me is using the hybrid mode and separating the lossy files (encoded at 160 kbps) and correction files which are much larger. When combined in the same folder, they have the same full bitrate and quality as FLAC - and can be unpacked back to a WAV through wavpack frontend. The lossy files sound quite good by themselves
- Until quite recently, all of my archived master files were encoded in FLAC which I still am quite fond of and would recommend to anyone out there. The hybrid mode of wavpack that offers the best of both the lossy and lossless worlds was what won over me though.
- Before that I used APE. Development on this codec is as far as I know either stalled or mostly dead now. A shame it was decent but there are better choices out there now IMO. I believe it was experiencing APE files going corrupt after several months that pushed me to FLAC.
- If memory serves my 'master' copies before APE were in lossy codecs like MP3. I used CBR 128 *shudder* for master copies six or seven years back then progressed to the better sounding VBR settings. There are still some older files on my server that are VBR 192 and VBR 256 MP3s.
Fortunately I had the sense to burn the sense to burn the WAVs to audio CDs before 'archiving' them in MP3, and someday may convert them to a proper codec to replace the MP3s.

Along the way various files in Musepack, Ogg-Vorbis (in various forms), AAC, and other audio codecs that slip my mind now have accumulated in my collection.

summary: FLAC, Wavpack, and Ogg-Vorbis are all being actively developed and very good choices depending on your situation and use.
APE and Musepack are sitting stagnant in development as far as I know - (anyone feel free to correct if that is wrong)
MP3 is the 'standard' that is getting long in the tooth but on the flip side may be the best choice for hardware compatibility for an MP3 player, etc. My opinion on that is get an portable audio player that supports Ogg-Vorbis, AAC or newer codecs.
<<my opinion>>
If you want to archive your CDs, LPS, or whatever else then you should use FLAC or Wavpack (again I am partial to the hybrid mode)
<<my opinion>>

</long answer>

Sorry about the rambling, I suppose that I could start a thread dedicated to audio stuff if anyone cares enough or even *gasp* use my website.

That’s a neat idea! The main benefit I see for that is having the paired files on your computer and the lossy files on your portable media (“MP3”) player without going through the hassle of converting your files to make them fit. Of course, short of installing Rockbox, I doubt WavPack will play in those media players, but still.

I went from archiving with 128 kbit/s MP3 to Ogg Vorbis to FLAC. I’m comforted by the thought that I can, at least theoretically, write a script to convert to another lossless format in the event that FLAC goes bust or that something better comes out.

Your wavpack files are your masters that work on your computer and you can create the smaller lossy files in whatever codec works best as needed for your portable media players/whatever else.
it is simple enough to write scripts to do those type of conversions as often as needed. FLAC is an ideal choice as it should be around a long time, has very active development, and is very widespread in its use.

I decided to ride my bike to Woodbury today – over 60 km round-trip. Hills + heat = torture. In hindsight, I’d have stopped at the Rutherford–Cannon County border to avoid the hills, but I’m pretty stoked that my first ride outside Murfreesboro was a success.

I have a headache, but a good kind of headache.

wow 60km is quite a lot if roads are bad, don't think I've ever driven that much on my bike non stop, think 10k is most I've done lol. That reminds me, now that the snow is gone I can take out my bike. Heck, its probably even safe to put away the snow shovels now, though doing that often causes a curse which involves a snow storm.

Well, I did take breaks, because it was around 35 °C. I arrived back in Murfreesboro about five hours later.

While me and some friends were driving to woodlands, a outdoor paintball field, my friend told me to try out his new hair line trigger. Since he has a 11" barrel it was sticking out of the window a bit, I didn't know he had some paintball rounds in his hopper.. and with the hairline trigger being so sensitive I got off about 10 rounds into a building. I didn't hit a window, thankfully. But I did have a priceless "oh crap" face according to what my friends say. :didi:

If you mean BPS then yup, he has a really nice marker. Electric hopper, etc. His marker can shoot up to 20 balls per second. Mine can only fire 13-15 balls per second. Oh, and marker is what we call the gun since we don't want to categorize it as being a rifle or fire arm of any sort.
