I think the only reason linux is more secure is because it's more complicated. Since when I'm asked (or want) to hack into a server, the minute I see it's linux, I have no clue what to try since it's too vast and complicated in terms of functionability. But if I connect and notice it's a windows system, it's going down fairly quick. Especially IIS. But even then it's the server software and not the OS that plays a big role in security. Apache on windows is nearly as secure as it is on linux. All the windows exploits that worms attack are servers that are built into the OS. If those servers would of been made secure, the exploits would not exist.

But I still find performance to be much better in linux then windows, for servers. A GUI uses a vaste ammount of memory, and linux puts less resources towards the GUI. (though you can get some pretty nice ones for linux which probably use allot of memory, but they are optional and not built in)

But the linux vs windows issue is tricky since in most cases we'll go for what we know more about, since we feel more comfortable with it. So in our case Windows. I would still not feel comfortable to put my linux server online since I know nothing about linux security compared to windows security. But for my server performance and functionabiliy is the one and only key since there's no hackers in my house.
