Post by rovingcowboy »

having trouble with this ie 8 and can't find the answer need some help please.

do any of you know what to do in order for this to show the favorites drop down menu.

i've got a bookmark.htm file to import but when i do it asks me to pick i folder to put them in but it shows a blank text box that won't let me type in.

do it wont let me import them either? :(

the only way i can get to any of the old sites is to hunt the urls or try to type them from memory the latter works with sites i been to alot.

but some i only show up on once in a blue moon i've got no clue as to what their url's are.

so i need an favorites list. please if you know how to get it working let me know thanks. :o

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211089 I think this is what your looking for correct? I'm assuming there's more to it then this.

Just to be sure you don't overlook the obvious. Just view the bookmark.htm file with IE  It is webpage file so should be somewhat readable no? All links should be in there even if you can't import it you should be able to read it and type them in manually or copy, paste.

Just right click on bookmark.htm > Open with> Internet explorer. Or you can make a second copy of the file then rename the new copy to bookmark.txt and it will open in notepad.

Hope this helps ^^

thanks triple.
but the looking at the bookmark htm is almost an automatic reaction anymore.
thanks for the info anyway on that. B)

as for the link it says to do what is normal also. but that is what i do and can't get them imported.

in their list they said i think step 5 for the import instructions they said the area i'm having trouble with.
the picking of the folder to put the imported list in.

look at this reply section.
take away all the controls and the smilies and leave the text area on the page. :(

that is just what i get when i am told to pick a folder to put the import in to.
only i can't type in that text area? :banghead:

i've found the favorites folder under the admin or owners folder in the doc and settings. folder. so i copyied it and placed it in all the other user's folders in the same place. :o

nothing will show the drop down menu for favorites, i can't even get it to let me add any or organize them.. :bsod:

You mean you can't create brand new bookmarks/favorites at all?

yep thats right i can't make new ones or do anything with the old ones.
i can't import them at all.

the only way i can use any type of favorites link is to type it in and then never clear the typed urls.

Well I'm not really sure about this one at all. Un-install>Re-install or much like you should have long ago lol Switch to the fox my friend. It will hold the bookmarks at the very least.

I KNOW it's a pain getting used to using a new program when you have one that kind of does the job but once you get used to the new program and lose the habit of automatically clicking the old then it truly is better.

Do me a favor and try it with an open mind, If you expect garbage and cave into that weird feeling of disliking it because it's different/new then ya you won't like nor care for it. It took me a while to switch from mozilla to firefox even though they are nearly identical just due to the fact that it was different ever so slightly.

Just use it untill you have not only your old favorites in it but also new ones that you use all the time, That's when you begin to love it. Takes much more then a 2 or 3 day "trial" and it also means putting it on the computer you use most not least. Also hiding the EI8 shortcut helps a ton or removing ie8 all together as you can always get it back if you REALLY want it. Use it everyday for a week or 2. Once you hit the love it point you will put it on all computers.

i've got firefox have had it for years. but like ie.

i've also got maxthon but like ie. B)

unlike most i dont get rid of things that might be of use later on. so until i can nolonger get and or keep ie working then i'll go to one of the others. i like to keep my software working so i update most of the programs all the time, some only now and then. :o

its a thing i have to do, cause it is messed up i got to get it fixed.
and i use ie 99% of the time once in awhile i'll use one of the others just to keep in touch with them. :)

i stopped going in to stores to buy music cd's or albums. cause people don't put them in proper order and i spend half hour or more putting them in order so i can see what i might want to buy. (drives my sister crazy when i do that  ) but it drives me crazy to find george jones's album with the song he called the wall. mixed in the pink floyd albums. :bsod:
same song name. very different songs.
