What good is Linux??

Post by richardj »

I have had a MAJOR pc crash, and I had to reformat.

I had made an Acronis backup on a seperate drive---and---

When I tried to restore it Acronis says--" No backup image found"--even though there is 38 MB of .tib (backup files) on the drive.

I HATE Acronis --it always fails when you need it most.

Anyway, I loaded Linux Knoppix & can see the files, but I can't do a thing with them.

Linnux won't allow me to write to my C drive because--it says--it's NTFS & if I write to it I will destroy the system files! :grade11math:

So, then I tried to burn them to a CD & Linux fails at that too--it says it can't determine the final size of the burn--even though it's telling me it's size!

It's useless to view the files if I can't do anything with them, and I'll lose EVERYTHING on my pc!

ANy ideas?? :banghead:

So, I found out it won't burn, because I tried to burn using the same CD as the Linux disk was on--but now it won't burn because each of the .tib files are 4 GB, so I have 38 GB of backups I can't access.

I found out how to change the write permissions, but it still won't let me copy from one hard drive to the next.

Can't write to or can't create directory are the error messages. :handintest:

It's no wonder noone uses Linnux--it's error mesages are worse then Windows. :dosgonebad: :bsod:

sooo you mucked up your xppro computer.

how the did you muck it up and make it crash bad enough to think you need
to go through the back up?

oh well thats past.

you still have the windows folder on your system or did you wipe it.

you still have any of the windows os on your system.

start up in safe mode do a scan to see if there is anything that will popup in the windows folders that tells you to reinstall.
i got a message like that once i did not even get in to safe mode before i got the message, maybe you will get it that fast too.
then get your windows xp pro install disk. see if it will let you over install the windows folders only.

my xp home did. :awesome:

SIGH

NO--I backed up first

Then I did a low level format on the drive :banghead:

Then I found out that the Acronis backup--which was on a seperate drive--failed :bsod:

So, now, even though Acronis says "no backup files can be found"--I have in fact, 32 GB that I can't access. :pissed off:

It turns out that the problem was a bad CD drive--that I wasn't even using--I kept getting a BSOD of "page_fault_in_non_page_area" and "IRQL_less_then_equal"

I knew that it was hardware related, but I reformatted anyway, thinking that the Hard drive was going & after doing write testing--I had to reinstall. :banghead:

Nasty stuff.

I often ensure to test my acronis images to ensure they work, after creating them, even if just test in a VM to ensure it "boots" (usually to a BSOD).

Yeah--that's one of the reasons Acronis sucks

One of the options IS to verify backup--but why should I have to?

Either the program works, or it doesn't.

I usually do this, but it took, like 3 hours to run & I wanted to move on.

BUT WHY can't I copy these files over in LInux??

What's the answer to this? :grade11math:

If I could copy them to a new directory , Acronis MIGHT open them as idividual backups.

I'll never use that "secure zone" again--I'll just back up using the regular file system.

You can do either with Acronis.

So you already tried putting in an old hard drive as a slave and moving them to it?
